Carnival Week
Big Blue Summer Week 7
Staff Highlight: Claire Fitzpatrick- Speciality Teacher, Drama/ S.T.E.M.
When it comes to being a able to juggle multiple tasks Claire is a professional captaining both our Drama Games and S.T.E.M. rotations. A sophomore from Boston College studying communications and former lead in Mary Poppins at Summit High School, she is no wallflower. Having to shift back and forth from each activity while catering to a variety of aged campers, Claire is always on her toes. In her weekly dance and Talent Show electives, she makes each camper feel like a star! “I get to see a creative side of the campers not everyone gets to experience and I think that’s pretty special,” she says.

C - Curiosity- Juggling Camp Activities
Juggling is a skill that takes a while to master, as Big Blue Summer campers quickly discovered! Specialty guest jugglers visited this week to show campers the patience and fun that goes along with any good juggling act. These professionals wowed campers with all the juggling tools, tricks, and concentration. Then, campers gave it a try, starting with “Devil Sticks” and beanbags, or even the spinning plates! Even counselors were drawn into the grand experiment with gravity that is juggling.
O - Openness- Day Camping
This week our L.I.T.s went exploring in the wilderness, hiking to Pingry’s camp site. With the help of camp leaders Nick DeRosa, Fiona Murphy and seasoned survivalist/speciality guest William McArthur, campers worked together to start a fire and cook their own lunch. As the L.I.Ts were enjoying each other’s company, and the lunch they made themselves over an open flame, they opened their minds to consider what changes they would make to camp if they were in charge. Over the course of the week, the worked with their counselors to develop their ideas into a professional pitch, presented to Cindy McArthur on Friday. One of their ideas, which Mrs. McArthur is open to considering, is more time at the campsite next year!
D - Dedication- Create a Carnival game, S.T.E.M.
What is better than going to a carnival? Making your own carnival game is the answer! Campers used recycled boxes as the base for their game designs, which ranged from simple tossing games to an interactive water gun game with an alien theme. Each game winner got prizes that showed their effort and excitement on the day. “They stayed focused and on task when creating the games that catered to all ages.” says Ms. Fitzpatrick S.T.E.M. rotation leader.
E - Enthusiasm- Big Blue Summer Carnival
What brings more enthusiasm than the annual Big Blue Summer Carnival? Campers were experiencing it all, from dunking their favorite counselors in the dunk tank to getting their faces painted by professionals. Sweet treats and carnival games rounded out the afternoon. Campers’ creations were played alongside rental carnival games, and some BBSDC favorites, like the doughnut-eating contest. Our weekly special events are exciting times because it is one of the few moments during the week that campers of all ages get to participate in an activity together.

H - Honor- Giving back Toys
Carnival week is about fun games, imagination and giving back; this week it was a through a toy drive. Campers were encouraged to bring in toys they will never play with to be donated to children they will never meet - a selfless act to which kids can easily connect meaning. Practicing sharing and generosity shows respect for others, and great honor. Any addition donations will continue to be accepted until the end of the summer programs.
