The Groves Grapevine
Building the future, one student at a time! 10/22/21
Our Groves families help us THRIVE in reading!
At Groves, we want all our students to have the same passion for reading. Filling their hands with books they enjoy reading is one of many ways to help build that passion. Also be sure the books they are reading are not too challenging. A good rule of thumb to help your child find a "good fit book" is to measure with a Five-finger Vocabulary Check. Ask your child to hold up five fingers and read one page of a book. Each time your child doesn't know a word, put one finger down. If all five fingers end up down, the book is too hard.
Interest level and choice is very important, but frustration comes when students do not understand what they have read. Try reading with your child a more challenging book, but keeping those they read independently on their level using he Five-finger Vocabulary Check.
Gator Groove Assemblies Term 1
We enjoyed celebrating your students this morning. They have really worked hard this first 9 weeks, transitioning into a new grade level of expectations, and some transitioning back to traditional school on campus! We look forward to sharing their successes in the upcoming 9 weeks as well.
Here are the links for each grade level’s assembly:

Squid Games
Unfortunately, many of our students have started discussing the Netflix series Squid Games during recess and connected it to playing red light/green light. Many phrases not appropriate to school that include "killing", "death", and "dying/dead" are being stated to classmates.
Our staff has addressed this with each class in an attempt to silence the majority of these conversations. Any students referring to the Squid Games with references to killing, death, or dying will be given consequences from this point forward.
Please talk with your child about this and remind them this topic is not appropriate at school. Thank you for helping us keep school a safe place, focused on learning!
Helping our students overcome challenges
Part of our core priorities in our mission statement at Groves is to help our learners overcome challenges. One of these ways is helping them be prepared and on time for learning!
When students come late to class, their day begins in chaos. They are scattered in trying to become organized, they are hurried in their morning work, and they are not present for the beginning of the day welcome or instructions. Being tardy actually creates more challenges!
Please remember student learning begins at 7:30. Our doors open at 7:00am and free breakfast is served in the cafeteria. Any students who arrive after staff on duty go inside will need their parent to come inside the office to sign-in their student as tardy.
Lunch reminder
Just a few reminders:
- We are at max capacity in our cafeteria, and designate all but two tables for classes. The two tables are labeled "visitors" and those are the places left for families. Please do not sit at classroom tables with other students as these are not students your visit has been approved for.
- Students are able to choose one friend to join them at the visitor table. Please remember not to share food or provide food with that student.
- Your visitor badge allows you entrance to the cafeteria, but not to the rest of the building. Be sure to respect the safety of others by only going to the cafeteria with your child. They will be escorted back to their classroom with their classmates and teacher.

COVID Notification Letters
- If there is a confirmed positive case in your child's class, you will receive a notification letter.
- This letter does not mean your child has to quarantine. It is simply notifying you of the case.
- There are no whole-school notifications this year for a positive case. They are only going to the exact class in which there was a positive test result.
- COVID daily total case reports by campus can be found at Wylie ISD/Health Services/COVID cases or https://www.wylieisd.net/Page/16303
