SAMR: REDEFINING LESSONS USING TECHNOLOGY

The model aims to enable teachers to design, develop, and integrate digital learning experiences that utilize technology to transform learning experiences to lead to high levels of achievement for students.Where are you on the SAMR continuum this month?

ADDING FILTERS IN PHOTOS
Filters are handy when you want to salvage an image or a photo that didn't turn out the way you'd hoped, or you want to change the mood and go for a special effect.
- Launch the Photos app from your Home screen.
- Tap on the photo you want to filter.
- Tap the edit menu along the bottom of the screen. It looks like three horizontal lines. (In iOS 9, the edit button is on the top right.)
- Tap the Filters button in the bottom menu.
- Tap on the filter you want to apply.
- Tap Done
Innovative Teaching and Learning:
- Integrate photos with writing projects as part of digital story telling by using filtered images as prompts; students look at an image and write a story around it.
- Explain a process by having students teach about something they know.” Create a "how-to" writing assignment — baking cookies or feeding a pet — and then take pictures of different steps in the process.
- Use Apple's vintage filters to create a beautiful aesthetic in your photos and its the perfect filter when presenting a history project on Keynote; show that the American Revolution took place a long time ago.
- Encourage students to take pictures of the places they visit and then do multimedia presentations about those locations using photo filters to complement the writing. Change the filter to black and white. Does that change the style of the presentation? Explain.
- Get students more attuned with nature through "photo walks.” Take a class for a walk around the school to take pictures of elements of art, such as textures or lines, or specific kinds of leaves or trees. This practice will get them to look more closely at the things around them, and become a lot more aware of their environment.
- Push students to get "artistic" with their picture taking. That means changing the angle from which they capture images but also suggesting, "Imagine you're a flower or a bird flying over." By doing that, they start to look at things in a different way, she says. Change the focus— take pictures of textures, [flaking] paint, cement, something grated, manholes, even little things like cracks on the ground."
Tobytech's Monthly Website Recommendation
FLIPQUIZ
Flipquiz provides educators with a quick way to create your own gameshow-style boards for test reviews in the classroom. Traditionally, these are created tediously, using poster board, chalkboards, PowerPoint™ or dry-erase markers on overhead slides. The review questions themselves are usually written on a separate sheet of paper.
With Flipquiz, questions are displayed on-screen and boards are saved for later use. Combined with a beautiful board, students are more likely to be interested and stay engaged with the test review process.
Tobytech's Three-Free App Recommendations
LETTER SCHOOL
An Award winning app recommended by parents and teachers. Play to learn how to write all letters of the alphabet: abc - xyz and the numbers 1-10 with LetterSchool. Kids practice essential skills as they play four exciting games per letter or number.
QUIZLET- FREE
This is a great app for teaching students to study vocabulary. The app also includes games and quizzes. It is the perfect way to memorize words you need to know! Teachers can share the flashcards with their students. A great way to get students involved is to have them create sets and share with classmates.
DICTANOTE
Dictanote is an excellent note-taking tool with a powerful speech recognition facility. We have already featured this tool in our list of the best 5 speech to text apps for chrome published a couple of years ago and today we are revisiting it again as it has added some new interesting features.

NEXT STEPS FOR VANGUARDS: WHAT GOOD LOOKS LIKE
- Plan your "Intro to Apple Teacher" PD. Create incentives and integrate SAMR. How many badges can your teachers achieve?
- Meet with your instructional team at least once a month at a designated time and place to summarize and share this SMORE and professional development and how you differentiate this information to your teachers. The instructional team consists of you, your Principal, Lead Literacy Teacher, Lead Tech Teacher and Assistant Principal.
- Use Toby as your "go to" Education Manager for Technology. If I don't know the answer, I will direct you appropriately. Use FaceTime as much as you can. My cell is 215-680-0123. I am also here to coach you and help you plan your professional development sessions.
OUR NEXT SESSION WILL RESUME ON DECEMBER 1, 2016
