COMPASS SCHOOL NEWS
ASSESSMENTS ~ Save the Dates! Testing Preparedness Month is February 2020, and that includes two (2) workshops to help scholars prepare for testing:
1. Tuesday, February 18 at noon: Combating Test Anxiety presented by the Counseling Department
2. Thursday, February 20 at noon: Test Prep Scholar Workshop presented by CCS teachers.
Both of these workshops will have helpful tips for testing as well as details about testing with CCS and what to expect. More details and links for these workshops will be available soon.
AVID ~ How do you learn? Do you prefer to listen to information, would you rather see it, or do you learn best by doing? If you know your learning style, you can tailor your study habits and be more successful. Complete the questionnaires below to find out which learning style may work best for you. Once complete, reflect on the results and on how this may affect your learning. You may find you can study certain subjects better by using different strategies.

ONLINE HANDBOOK HIGHLIGHT ~ As we approach the end of the semester, plan to revisit the Online K-12 grading policies found in our Online Handbook (pages 27-30) to help better understand how final grades are awarded. If you have any questions, please reach out to your Supervising Teacher.
PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL SURVEY ~ Our Parent Advisory Council has created a survey, to ask about your Compass Experience. Please complete the Parent Survey today and help the Council enhance and expand the Compass Experience! We ask that you complete the Parent Survey by Friday, January 31 to be entered into a special raffle (see survey on how to enter)!
SCHOLAR LEADERSHIP COUNCIL SURVEY ~ Our Scholar Leadership Council has also created a survey, for our scholars in all grades to complete! They are looking for input on the Compass Experience as well, from the scholar perspective. Please share the Scholar Survey with your scholar(s) today! We ask that your scholar(s) complete the Scholar Survey by Friday, January 31!

EARLY FINISH PRIZE ~ With less than three weeks left in semester one, there is still time to earn extra points! Scholars who finish their course(s) by January 27th will earn an incentive from that teacher. Be on the lookout for your course announcement that outlines your early finish prize!

FEATURED COUNSELING SERVICES LESSON
Middle and High School "Coping: Your Personal Toolbox" - Tuesday, January 14 from 12:00-1:00pm in the Counseling Learning Lab
This session will take scholars and learning coaches through the different ways to cope with the range of emotions that many times lead to some form of self-injury, including self-talk to reduce anger, affirmations, building a support network amongst family and friends, and other safe alternative activities to cope with overwhelming emotions. Due to the nature of the topic parent consent is required to attend this session. Please submit the Parent Consent Form prior to joining the session. You will walk away from this experience with all of these important tools, not only to arm yourself with them but to help others as well. Please join Mrs. Ayala and Mr. Sampes in the Counseling Learning Lab to learn more about coping skills.

Available to: Current high school seniors (U.S. Citizens) who have completed a minimum of five (5) blended or online courses during their last two years of high school.
Award Amount: Twenty (20) $5,000 awards and ten (10) $10,000 awards.

EVENT SPOTLIGHT ~ Come join us on Friday, January 24 at Buena Vista Museum in Bakersfield! Learn about anatomy, astronomy, anthropology, archeology, biology, geology and paleontology all in one location at Buena Vista Museum! Scholars receive a well-rounded view of science and natural history on a tour seeing fossils, animal mounts, Native American history, gems and minerals, life-size dinosaurs casts, and more! STEPS TO COLLEGE ~ Join Steps to College on Saturday, February 1 in Sacramento! Steps to College is the greatest bilingual university fair of Northern California and it is free of charge! Representatives from distinguished colleges and universities from California and Mexico, as well as State of California higher education experts, and nonprofit higher education organizations and advocates work together each year to help students navigate the college experience and learn about their finance options for higher education. CONTEST SPOTLIGHT ~ The National Missing Children’s Day Poster Contest is a nationwide contest designed to promote awareness among teachers, parents/guardians and children and engage them in discussions about safety. Participants must be in 5th grade and follow specific guidelines. Entries must be postmarked by Monday, February 3. To view all contest details and rules, please read this packet.
CLUB SPOTLIGHT ~ The GSA (Genders & Sexualities Alliance) serves as a gathering space for a diverse group of scholars who are interested in learning more about LGBTQI. At the GSA Club, there is a safe and welcoming environment. The club explores LGBTQI-Affirmative literature and historical persons who have made positive and impactful contributions to the global community, in order to build a more positive sense of self-worth and identity. They also explore current social justice issues as they pertain to the LGBTQI Community, and how to be more proactive and effective about educating peers, leaders, and school communities in order to create welcoming spaces for all, and begin developing leadership skills while moving into the next phase of life. This group is open to all high school scholars, including non-LGBTQI allies!
