Greetings from the Principal
Dear Riverview families,
I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend on the heels of the very successful and special PTA-sponsored 'Guys & Dolls' dance on Friday. Thank you to all of the 'guys' who brought their lovely dates to the dance!
Monday, January 18 was set aside to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. In his honor, I would like to share excerpts from "The Meaning of The King Holiday" as written by Coretta Scott King, whose esteemed values reflect the character traits we as a community look to instill in our children:
"The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through his example — the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King’s character and empowered his leadership. ...
On this day we commemorate Dr. King’s great dream of a vibrant, multiracial nation united in justice, peace and reconciliation; a nation that has a place at the table for children of every race and room at the inn for every needy child. We are called on this holiday, not merely to honor, but to celebrate the values of equality, tolerance and interracial sister and brotherhood he so compellingly expressed in his great dream for America. ...
Whether you are African-American, Hispanic or Native American, whether you are Caucasian or Asian-American, you are part of the great dream Martin Luther King, Jr. had for America. This is not a black holiday; it is a peoples’ holiday. And it is the young people of all races and religions who hold the keys to the fulfillment of his dream. ...
We call you to commemorate this Holiday by making your personal commitment to serve humanity with the vibrant spirit of unconditional love that was his greatest strength, and which empowered all of the great victories of his leadership. And with our hearts open to this spirit of unconditional love, we can indeed achieve the Beloved Community of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream. May we who follow Martin now pledge to serve humanity, promote his teachings and carry forward his legacy into the 21st Century."
Make it a great week!
Beth Mildren
Riverview Educational Fundraiser Week!
Please help us continue to be able to utilize a Time for Kids (TFK) subscription for classrooms, and maintain Riverview’s valuable subscriptions to research and learning programs that renew annually! Our teachers consider the TFK resource to be very valuable for their integrated units, as it has both a newspaper-type text for reading closely and online component.
We earn 40% of all magazine orders. Last January we raised nearly $3,000 on this important project. This year our goal is to raise $3,200! This building fundraiser is one of the main funding sources we have for meeting our additional technology/subscription needs that support Riverview students K-5.
On behalf of our staff, thank you in advance for taking time to review the TFK packet and participate in order to benefit our students!

Staff Spotlight
Hi! My name is Kyndel Reeves, and this is my first year at Riverview as the Physical Education teacher. I was lucky enough to do my student teaching here last January through March, so I am very grateful to be back. I didn’t want to leave! I grew up in the DeSoto school district and feel very blessed to be able to come back and teach in the district that helped mold me into the person I am today.
I attended the University of Kansas and graduated with my bachelor’s degree in health and physical education and plan to begin a master’s program in the near future. I have been a die-hard KU fan since the day I was born. Rock Chalk!
When I am not at school I am always with my family. I have four siblings and incredible parents, so there is never a dull moment! We love to take family trips when our schedules allow (preferably somewhere warm!), and just be together. We had a blast watching the Royals WIN the WORLD SERIES (!!!!) this past November. I also love being with friends and catching up on our busy lives.
I love everything about Riverview. The students, staff, and families are all so welcoming. This year has already been so spectacular for me. I am looking forward to many more!
Kindest Kansas Citian Contest
It’s time again for the 26th annual Kindest Kansas Citian contest. This is an amazing opportunity for your child to recognize and identify an adult role model who demonstrates kind, caring and respectful behavior. In this week’s Monday folder, contest form and guidelines will be sent home. During counselor lessons this week I will review contest guidelines with all students and encouraging them to participate. All contest forms must be filed out completely and returned to me no later than January 29th. Please feel free to contact me any questions tthurmanunsey@usd232.org and have a super week!
