Attendance Matters!
- dropping out of school
- not being able to read proficiently by 3rd grade
- becoming incarcerated
- have difficulty finding a job
- drug/alcohol abuse
- academic failure
Having your child in school ON TIME and ALL day is crucial for success. Sending students to school late or picking them up early is a disruption to their learning and their classmates' learning.
What can you do to increase your child's attendance or ensure good attendance?: (Taken from http://www.showupstandout.org/get-the-facts/why-attendance-matters/)
- Don’t let your child stay home unless he or she is truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or a headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Set a regular bedtime and wake up with an alarm clock.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, the school principal, or other parents for advice on how to make him/her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
- Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
- Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
