Measles

A highly contagious virus!

What is it?

  • Highly contagious, serious disease, this causes a red rash all over your body
  • It’s also known as rubella or red measles
  • The virus infects the mucous membranes and then spreads throughout the body

Causes/ transmissions:

  • Caused by a type of virus called paramyxovirus
  • It is spread through tiny droplets when an infected person cough or sneezes
  • This virus isn’t like the influenza, the measles virus won`t be able to survive on door knobs
  • This is an air-borne virus, therefore it is highly contagious
  • You can spread this virus to others from 4 days before the rash appears until 4 days the rash has disappeared

Effects on personal health and on the health of others:

· Bad cough

· A high fever

· Red, sore eyes

· Developing white spots in your mouth

· Rash developing behind your ears, then moving downwards on your body

Treatment:

· Get plenty of rest

· Drink lots of fluids

· Vitamin A supplements

Prevention:

· Getting the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccination

· Avoiding contact with a person who has measles until symptoms have cleared up
