Design Cycle Report about new DT lab at NISC

Identify the Problem

In the 2014-15 academic year, NISC will be offering DT as an MYP and DP subject for secondary students and they need a DT lab built over the summer break... because the do not currently have one.

Design Brief

Existing rooms 5101, 5102, 5103, 5104 and 5105 have been allocated to be converted into the new DT Lab and your task to is to research DT Labs around the world and design the new Design Technology lab using SKETCHUP to present to The Apsara Architecture Company, The Bayon Construction Company and Super-Strong Tool Suppliers who will be selecting the best design.

Research and Skill Development

(Stage 1) To develop my understanding and skill of design I examined the primary cafeteria and sketched it, with attention to scale, measurements and detail and this is what I drew (insert image).


(Stage 2) To develop my understanding and skill of design, using the cafeteria space, I designed and drew a new assembly hall, lecture theatre and examination room and this is what I drew (insert image).


(Stage 3) I used SKETCHUP to create a model of my new assembly hall, lecture theatre and examination room (included images of your design).


(Stage 4) To develop my understanding of design technology labs I conducted some research and this is what I discovered...



End User and Target Audience

All MYP students will be using the DT Lab and some DP students. The DT Lab design will be presented to The Apsara Architecture Company, The Bayon Construction Company and Super-Strong Tool Suppliers who will be responsible for selecting the best design and eventually building it.

Testing Method

My product will be presented to the three target groups for testing and the test will be in the form of a checklist and to seek feedback.


The checklist will be in direct correlation with the Design specifications and the tester will rate as

  • <satisfactory>
  • <good>
  • <very good>
  • <excellent>


The feedback collected will include:


  • suggest 3-5 ways to improvement the product
  • list 3-5 strengths
  • comments about the use of space and layout
  • proficiency of SKETCHUP


Design Specifications

The product must have:


  • precise, correct and accurate room dimensions based on the existing building structures
  • four emergency exits
  • two main entry points
  • very good ventilation
  • maximum natural light
  • ability to function in the event of a power failure
  • place for washing hands
  • emergency shower
  • eye washing
  • two first aid stations
  • 1 firehouse and 2 fire extinguishers
  • a place for students to store bags, personal items and project that they are working on
  • truck loading bay
  • a display area
  • space for 25 students
  • tools/machinery and materials for for class tasks that include (a) furniture making (wood) (b) toys for kids (wood) (c) producing a letterbox (sheet metal) and (d) key fob making (acrylic)
  • storage place for wood, metal, paint and acrylic
  • tool storage
  • safety equipment and safety equipment storage
