Tiger Tales from Sanborn School
Week of January 31st, 2022
Dear Sanborn Families,
Happy New Year! Our Sanborn Tigers have been busy learning since returning from Winter Break. During the week of January 10th, students reviewed our three school Tiger Traits: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. Students are positively rewarded with "paws" when they are following our school expectations. Congratulations to the December Golden Paw Winners: Mrs. Goode's AM Kindergarten Class and Mrs. Kravitz's 4th grade class. The entire class was being respectful, responsible, and safe. Mrs. Goode's class enjoyed a special arts and craft activity and Mrs. Kravitz's class enjoyed playing Bingo!
It's hard to believe that we are about to celebrate the 100th day of school. We look forward to a successful 2022 and appreciate your partnership in your child's learning. Thank you for taking the time to read through all of the important information located in this newsletter. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions.
Warmly,
Kate Arenberg, Principal

Cold Weather Guidelines
Indoor recess is determined based on the following guidelines:
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is below 0°F, all students will remain inside for the entire lunch hour.
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is between 0°-10°F, the preferred procedure is a rotation of 20 minutes for lunch, a 20-minute outdoor recess, and a 20-minute indoor recess. However, at the principal's discretion, students may be kept inside for the entire lunch hour.
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is above 10°F, students will have regular outdoor recess.
Please make sure your child is bringing the appropriate winter gear to school to stay warm. If you need support, please let the office know.
Important: School Time Change Effective February 23rd, 2022
Beginning on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, District 15 will move to a 3-tiered bus system in order to continue to be able to transport all 10,000 students during a nationwide bus driver shortage. As we have reported to the Board of Education over the past many months, there is a critical nationwide driver shortage across many industries here and across the country. School bus drivers are a true part of this shortage. To that end, District 15 has been faced with a significant and growing bus driver shortage since the start of the school year.
We know this is a hardship. We truly understand the impact a mid-year change in daily school schedule will have on many of our staff and families and have made every effort to minimize the impact, but the problem cannot be solved without changes being made. We have done everything we can to work within this shortage, but there are no easy long-term solutions which would maintain the current start times. Please know that changes to school start times range from 10 to 35 minutes. The transportation department will send out new pick up/drop off times in February.
Sanborn's new times are listed above in the pink image. AM Supervision will begin at 9:00 a.m. The second bell will be at 9:15 a.m., and instruction is expected to begin. If your child arrives after 9:15 a.m., you will need to bring your child to the front office to sign them in for the day.
Lunch and recess times will be as follows:
11:50-12:50 p.m.: ECDEC, Bilingual Kindergarten, and Primary AIME and MILE
12:20 p.m.-1:20 p.m.: Grades 1-6, Intermediate AIME and MILE

5Essentials Survey
Students and teachers in District 15 and across Illinois are asked to participate in the annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school. As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school.
The 5Essentials Survey asks questions about:
*Effective Leaders
*Collaborative Teachers
*Involved Families
*Supportive Environments
*Ambitious Instruction
You may take the survey by visiting https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/ and selecting the appropriate survey to begin.
For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, please visit https://www.isbe.net/Pages/5Essentials-Survey.aspx.
From the Nurse's Office
Please provide the nurse's office with:
- A copy of your child's COVID-19 vaccine after the second dose, and
- Any physical exams, eye exams, and dental exams after appointments.
Lastly, if you have any scarves, mittens, snowpants, or boots, we are still accepting donations. We also are in need of knit pants for boys and girls.
Consider Supporting Sanborn's Gaga Pit Project!
Connor Cox is a scout from Troop 461 working on earning his Eagle rank. For his final project, he wants to give the students of Sanborn a Gaga Pit with an ADA door so that all students can participate. This is a game that he has enjoyed playing at camp for many years. He has also noticed that many elementary schools in our district have 1 or even 2 Gaga pits while Sanborn does not have any. When his goal is reached, he will be able to purchase the supplies and have it built for the students to use this spring.
Thank you for your support!

ECDEC is a free preschool program for 3-5 yrs old. We have screening dates scheduled on February 10th and 23rd. Parents should contact the screening secretary, Noemi Nova, at 847-963-3450 for more information.
