Comet Connection
Keeping you connected with Silver City ES!
ADMIN UNIVERSE
Comet Families,
We hope you had a safe and fun time with your family over Spring Break and got to spend some quality time together. My family did not travel anywhere but we did enjoy the beautiful weather and got to do some of our favorites things as a family.
We wanted to thank you for all of the flowers, notes, books, school supplies, gift cards, and treats you showered our teachers with during Teacher Appreciation Week. As always, you made our teachers feel loved and appreciated!! We also wanted to send a huge SHOUT-OUT to our PTA who provided breakfasts, coffee, a delicious boxed lunch, and multiple gift cards to thank the staff for all of their hard work this year. Thanks for taking such great care of our staff, PTA!
Two important events that are kicking off this week:
- Hero Squad - This is a Shuttle competition where we will be collecting loose change and donations to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) in their fight against blood cancers. Families can contribute in two ways -- a) send in loose change to be collected in specific Shuttle Containers in the front lobby OR b) logon to your child's classroom Hero Squad page, and make an online donation. Either way, all donations contribute points to the Shuttle Challenge!
- SCES Book Fair - We are excited to have our in-person Book Fair this year as our Comets have loved checking out books and finding new things to read from the media center. Each class will have a "preview" day where they get to see the books they want to purchase and make a wish list and a separate "purchase" day where they bring in their money to buy their books. More specific information will be sent out from each homeroom teacher. Kick-off is this Tuesday!
We hope you enjoy this edition of the Comet Connection as we share the following information with you:

21-22 Learning Environment Options Survey for ALL Students
On Monday, April 12, we will send you a survey to select the learning environment for your child for next school year. If you have more than one child, you will need to complete a survey for each child who will be attending Silver City. If you do not submit a response to the survey by Friday, April 30, your child’s placement will default to learning in-person at school for 2021-22.
Elementary (K-5) – Two Choices
In-person learning at school, or
Virtual learning at home
Notes:
Virtual learning will be very similar to what students experienced this year, with at least 3-4 live, synchronous sessions each day where students will be required to log in and participate throughout each of those class periods.
Students will have a dedicated virtual teacher, but the teacher may not be from your districted school. Additionally, if you elect to change to in-person learning at school at the end of 1st semester, there is a very high chance that your child’s teacher will change in January.
Current 5th graders will complete the survey for the MIDDLE SCHOOL they will be attending next year, so you should expect an email from Mr. McClelland with their survey.
The learning environment survey will be sent to all Silver City families on Monday, April 12 and a survey for each child who will be enrolled in our school next year
must be completed by Friday, April 30 at 11:59pm.
Please email one of the administrators – Mr. Sloop, Ms. Carnes, or Ms. Fuchs –
if you have any questions about this survey or the learning options for next year.
2021 Spring Sibling Portrait Sign-up - Due by Tuesday, April 13
Please use this form to register your students for a sibling portrait during our spring portrait day. The information gathered on this form will be the only way SCES staff can plan the flow for picture day and make sure specific siblings are photographed together. We know it is a quick turnaround, but please complete this form by this Tuesday (April 13), to guarantee a spot for your Comets to have a sibling portrait taken. Please direct any questions regarding this form to Lily McGregor Photography at 770.317.5599. Thank you!
Hero Squad (Formerly Pennies for Patients)
Your child can participate by sending in loose change or donations to our collection containers in the school lobby behind Ms. Meredith OR by logging on to their classroom page at Herosquad.org and donating securely online. Online, you will need to "Find Your School" and then "Join Your Classroom Team".
One note, if you donate virtually, your child may be eligible for prizes directly from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. There will not be any prizes if you donate in person via the drop-off buckets or by turning in cash/checks to staff. Thanks for understanding!
SCES Book Fair - April 13-23 (REPEAT)
We are excited to host an in-person book fair beginning this Tuesday and running through Friday, April 23. We have put several procedures in place to make this a safe and enjoyable experience for all!
Each class will have a designated day/time for students to preview books available.
Students will sanitize their hands prior to entering and when exiting the Fair.
Each student will be provided with a Wishlist and pencil so they may record books they would like to purchase.
Students will be encouraged to take home their Wishlists to share with their parents/guardians prior to their assigned purchase day/time.
Student Purchases:
Each class will have a designated day/time to purchase after their preview day.
Students will sanitize their hands prior to entering and when exiting the Fair.
Safety First:
The safety and well-being of your child is our priority. We’re taking extra precautions to host a safe, socially-distanced Fair at our school, focusing on preventative measures.
Contactless Checkout Available: With Book Fair eWallet, a convenient digital payment account, your child can shop the Fair cash-free. And now grandparents, friends, and others can contribute to the eWallet to help build your home library!
Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet - https://www.scholastic.com/bf/silvercityelementaryschool2
As always, cash and check are accepted at the Fair. It is best to send money in prior to or on the designated shopping day in an envelope or ziploc bag with your child’s name on it.
If using a check, please make them payable to “Silver City ES” and ensure they are for the exact amount of the books being purchased.
Teachers will include a purchase day/time in their weekly communication (email, newsletter, etc.) so you will be aware of your child’s shopping day.
All purchases made during the Fair will bring our school 25% in rewards. We look
forward to seeing your child at the Fair!

Mr. Sloop's Summer Spin
Mr. Sloop's Summer Spin is coming! As part of our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program, students earn Comet Cash and can spend that cash every two weeks at our Comet Corner store. This year, we held a special Holiday Spin in December to amp up the fun for our students and it was a HUGE success! Ever since that event, they have been asking "when are we have another spin event with the prize wheel?"
We are excited to announce that our students will again have the opportunity to spend their Comet Cash in exchange for a spin on the prize wheel. Every spin is a win! To pull off this event, it takes LOTS of prizes, so we are asking for prize donations for our Summer Spin.
We have created a wish list of items below. All Oriental Trading items can be shipped directly to the school (Silver City ES, ATTN: Maleah Dickman, 6200 Dahlonega Hwy., Cumming, GA 30028). If you wish to purchase in person, we have also created a list of items that can be found at Five Below. These items can be dropped off at the front desk labeled with "Summer Spin".
We appreciate ALL donations and your help in making this an experience our students will not forget!

Calling all Volunteers - SCES Career Fair (REPEAT)
Morning Car Rider Reminders (REPEAT)
Please have your child ready to exit the car as you pull up to the front sidewalk (e.g., papers/folders inside backpack, food put away, seat belts unbuckled, hugs and kisses goodbye).
Pull your car as far forward as traffic allows without leaving large gaps between vehicles.
Please have your child open and close his/her own car door in order to keep the car line moving safely and efficiently. Do not exit the car yourself to help your child exit. Staff is available to help your child exit if they can not do it on their own.
All students must exit vehicles from the passenger side only.
Please NEVER let your child out in the parking lot to walk themselves into the school. This is definitely a safety concern.
All students must exit onto the sidewalk where the car stops in the line. Please do not keep your students in the car and pull down to the end of the sidewalk to exit. Only our Pre-K students are allowed to wait and exit at the end of the sidewalk.
Consider arriving at 7:55am to move quickly through the line. Remember, when weather is inclement, you will want to consider leaving home a little earlier to account for traffic and car rider back-ups. If you arrive in car rider after 8:15am, that is a high likelihood your child will be tardy that day.
- The tardy bell rings at 8:20 am (rain or shine). If your child is tardy, please park your car and accompany him/her inside the school building to be signed-in.
Please realize that our school day begins at 8:20am, when the bell rings.
At this time, our car rider staff members must enter the building and
get to their locations to begin working with students.
