Important Kindergarten and First Grade News!
Because of social distancing recommendations, our waiting area will be outside under the covered play area. This means, while you wait, you will be dry, but will also need to dress for the weather.
Kindergartners will also be able to pick up their supply packets that they will use in live conferences. Thank you in advance for signing up and bringing your child!
Important First - Fifth Grade Testing Information!
Who? All students in grades 1st – 5 th grades
What??? Mental math test – Automaticity (Auto-GOM) for grades 1st – 5 th no paper/pencil or whiteboard allowed. Students use mental strategies to calculate responses.
Applied mathematics Assessment – (CBMath CAP) for grades 2nd - 5 th Students may use paper and pencil, or a white board.
These assessments are given 3 times each school year. The purpose is for teachers and administrators to monitor student progress, and to ensure that each student is receiving the best supports or enrichment opportunities for them. These assessments are not used for grading.
When? Testing will take place on-line with their classroom teacher on Monday, October 19th – Tuesday, October 20th . Absent students will take the assessments with the math teacher or para-educator at a later date.
Where? The student will need a quiet space where they can focus well with no distractions such as conversations, tv, pets, toys etc. Students may also use headphones during the assessment in addition to being away from distractions.
Why? We need to have accurate data on each student so we can plan supports and enrichment opportunities that address their needs. Students need to complete these assessments independently, with no help from family members. Each student needs to try their best on their own.
How? Students will log into their classroom learning time as usual. The classroom teacher will explain what students are to do and give explicit directions. the more sustained focus the student has, the better they will perform on the assessment. When students are focused and try their best, the assessments take about 20 minutes each. Your child’s teacher will let your student know if they are taking both assessments on one day, or if they will be taking one assessment on Monday and the other on Tuesday.
** Please make sure your child attends their Synchronous learning time with their classroom teacher on Monday, October 19th and Tuesday, October 20th. Thank you for your help with these important assessments!

Habit 3 Put First Things First
In the next couple weeks I will be talking about Habit 3- Put First Things First, from Sean Covey’s 7 Habits of Happy Kids.
Putting first things first means deciding what is most important and taking care of that first. It can feel overwhelming to think about all the things that need to be done in a day, in a week or in a month. When we take the time to identify what is truly the most important and spend our time doing this first, we are less stressed and feel more confident. This means we have to sometimes say no to things that are less important. It can be difficult at first to prioritize.
Often we would rather do fun things first, but then we become stressed because we haven’t left time to do what really needs to be done. For example, your children might want to put off a big project or chore so that they can play video games or watch TV, or play with friends. When they put first things first, they learn to set priorities and build a schedule to make sure those important things get done first, then they can enjoy their free time without worry.
At school we are helping our Coyotes be disciplined and organized. A planner is a great tool to write down and plan ahead for what’s most important. If your child hasn’t started using a planner yet, a simple notebook that they can decorate and write down things that need to be done as well as things that they would like to do is a great start.
Here are some books to read with your child that help them understand more about Habit 3- Putting First Things First:
Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London
The Little Red Hen by Paul Galdone
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
Alejandro’s Gift by Richard E. Albert
Jamaica’s Find by Juanita Havill

Drive-Through Food Drive Events: Collins PTA has decided to help out the Pierce County Santa Cops this year with their food drive efforts. Pierce County Santa Cops helps local families, including many in our school district. Most of the food drives they usually host have been canceled because of the remote learning situation. We will be hosting 2 events in the month of November to collect food for them. These events will be a drive-thru situation to keep everyone safe. The Pierce County Santa Cops will be out there as well to thank everyone for their help. Once the dates are confirmed we will be announcing them in November’s Howler and on Collins Facebook page. Below is a note about the Pierce County Santa Cops. Please let the Collins PTA know if you wish to volunteer or have any questions. Email: collinsptacoyotes@gmail.com.
”Pierce County Santa Cops is a 501c3 charitable organization, founded and administered by members of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department. Our mission is to have a positive impact on the people and communities we serve. Each year we assist over 100 LOCAL families with more than 350 children, providing them with food, children's gifts and clothing, household essentials and special needs such as baby items and pet food. We aim to make their holiday season a just little brighter. We receive our family referrals primarily from the schools, but also receive referrals from law enforcement officers and community organizations.
