Southwood Bike Rodeo

As the cycling community grows in numbers, so does the need for an increased awareness of road safety. Whether you're a cyclist or a motorist, knowing the rules of the road will make our roads safer for all road users. Safe roads are everyone's responsibility and together, we can work to stay safe, have fun and build healthier communities.

For this reason, Southwood School will once again be hosting its annual Bike Rodeo on May 23rd, 2019. Grades 3 and 4 students are invited to bring their bikes to school on this day. Please remember to bring a bike lock. We have invited Manitoba Public Insurance to work with our students on the topic of bike safety. Students will also take part in an obstacle course to test their knowledge of the road.

If you are interested in reviewing the lessons and skills learned, feel free to visit http://www.mpi.mb.ca/en/PDFs/KidsCyclingBrochure.pdf and download this free resource from MPI.

Happy biking!!

Earth Day Fashion Show / MakerSpace Challenge

The next Makerspace Challenge has required each class to work collaboratively to create an outfit made completely out of reused and recycled materials. Students have been eagerly choosing a theme and creating a design plan with their class. With Earth Day recently taking place on April 22nd classes have been encouraged to think about items that can be reduced, reused and recycled.

We will have a fashion show to reveal these amazing creations on Global Day of Design, Monday, May 6th at 2pm. We are looking forward to seeing all the creativity that is going to be displayed as each class has a chance to choose a model to strut their outfit on the runway!

Balanced School Day Feedback

May 1, 2019

Dear Parents,

This year, Woodlawn School and Southwood School embarked on the Balanced School Day to structure our daily schedules. This two year pilot project was approved by the Hanover School Board. The Balanced School Day provides students with two longer activity/nutrition breaks each day. During each of these breaks, the students eat for 25 minutes and play outside for 25 minutes.

Both schools report improved supervision which has resulted in less incidents of negative behaviour. Teachers report that they are better able to help students learn to solve problems as they arise on the playground. As a result, teachers are also reporting that they are spending less class time working on recess issues than they have in previous years. Teachers have enjoyed the additional opportunity to build relationships with their students.

We would like to hear from you, any comments or questions that you have in regards to the Balanced School Day. Both Woodlawn School and Southwood School will be entering into the second year of the pilot project at the start of the 2019-2020 school year and we welcome any feedback you may have. Please respond by May 15th, 2019 using the links below.

K-12 Education Review

You Are Invited to Participate in the K-12 Education Review

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The Manitoba government has established a new commission to undertake a comprehensive, independent review of the Kindergarten to Grade 12 education system. The process will include extensive consultation across Manitoba, and consider a wide range of topics such as student learning, teaching, accountability for student learning, governance, and funding. Hanover School Division Board of Trustees welcome such a review of our public education system.

Two matters which may be under consideration in this review are the large-scale amalgamation of the 37 elected school boards in our province, and a possible move to appointed (rather than elected) school boards. HSD Board of Trustees strongly oppose any mandated reduction of school divisions in Manitoba, or the elimination of locally elected school boards.

School boards are grassroots, democratic institutions. Alone, either of these changes would severely undermine the ability of communities to shape local schools. The first would create overly-large administrative units, and the second would eliminate the right of communities to choose their own representatives to govern their school system. Together, these two changes could silence the community’s voice in education and take away community ownership of local schools. As citizens within the communities of Hanover School Division, we believe it is important to advocate for school division autonomy. This ensures decisions are made locally, based on what is best for the students within our schools.

Your voice matters, and we need your support! We encourage all parents/guardians and general community members to consider participating in the K-12 Education Review. You can do so by attending a public workshop, submitting a written response, or completing the online survey by May 30, 2019.

Please visit hsd.ca/governance/education-review/ for specific instruction on how you can share your voice, and help shape the future of education in Manitoba.

Yours Sincerely,

Ron Falk, Board Chair

Hanover School Division Board of Trustees
