THE STRENGTH OF THE WOLF IS ITS PACK

We have a Wasco Zoo!
After learning about volume in Module 5, fifth grade students were challenged to explore volume through a new lens. In teams, they chose an animal to build and then created a construction plan. The main constraint was that when it would come time to build their animal, they would only be able to use rectangular boxes. Once they had a solid plan, they were able to begin building their animals. While building, they needed to document the volume of each body part so that they could calculate the total volume of the structure. They then used their gift wrapping skills to decorate their boxes, secured them together, and added their finishing design touches (googly eyes, fake eyelashes, etc.) Their final challenge was transporting the animal from the classroom to the front of the building; this took almost more teamwork than the design process itself. The animals are displayed with their name plate and a short "about me" section where you can learn all about the animal- favorite food, birthday, etc.
