Cultivating Critical Thinking and Creativity in Responsive Learning Environments
Report Cards came home on Monday, February 28th. All of our students have proven capable of working hard to demonstrate curiosity, initiative, critical thinking skills and creativity across the subject areas. We are very proud of their efforts and accomplishments!
As you have conversations with your child about the report card, I encourage you to focus on learning skills and not as much on actual marks. If we praise effort and good work habits, rather than ability, students are more apt to develop a growth mindset, and set goals for improvement. Check out this video to see how this works (Carol Dweck: A study on praise and mindsets).

Also using the comments as feedback to improve will help children set goals. It's the character that children develop through hard work, perseverance, and responsibility that will help them be most successful now and in the future.
As a staff we are committed to working with you and your children to ensure success. This is a great point in the year to connect with your child's teacher. Please use the return slip on the report card to indicate whether you would like to arrange to discuss your child's report. Home-school partnerships are a very important part of your child's education.
As always, please contact me with any questions, concerns, or ideas you would like to share.

Voyageur Day
As part of our French program, we will welcome Jay Bailey (a retired French teacher from Simcoe aka the Voyageur Errant) for the day on Thursday, March 2nd. Each class will have the opportunity to participate in programming throughout the day!
If they wish, students may come dressed up as voyageurs! Here are some suggestions.
red woolen toque or fur hat => any colour toque => bandanna on head
neckerchief => bandanna around neck => light scarf
large, loose shirt => red or checked shirt, any colour => bright, loose shirt
woven sash => long red scarf around waist => any colour scarf
cotton, linen or hemp pants => corduroy pants => sweatpants
leggings => 12”-15” cutoff old brown pant legs => leg warmers
(leggings held at top by colourful cloth strips)
moccasins, mukluks => soft leather shoes => slippers
leather pouch => bag on string around neck and shoulder
beard => use your imagination, but it should be comfortable
(We've had everything from sphagnum moss to petroleum jelly with coffee grounds)
The voyageurs often adopted native dress, so if you can substitute braided hair or native-style clothing for any of the above, it would fit in well. No guns, knives or hatchets, please.
Parent Council Update

Lockdown Drill
The Limestone District School Board has a primary responsibility to ensure the safety of students and staff inside Board buildings and on Board property. In partnership with the Kingston City Police and OPP detachments, the LDSB has developed a city-wide Threats to School Safety Procedures plan.
Threats to School Safety Procedures are initiated when a high risk incident involving weapons, hazardous chemical spill, severe weather warning, student/stranger intrusion, etc., occur in the school or on school property, or there are circumstances in the vicinity of the school that could endanger the lives and/or the safety of students and/or staff.
In order for all students and staff to become familiar with expectations during a threat to school safety, our school will be practicing threat response procedures as we have normally done with fire drills. During these drills, signs will be posted on the entrance doors indicating that the school is in Shelter in Place, Hold and Secure, or Lockdown. The doors may be locked and no one will be allowed into the school. This is the same procedure that will be followed in a real situation. On the reverse side of this letter you will find further explanation about each of the threats to school safety situations.
Two mandatory practice drills will be held during each school year. We have scheduled a practice drill for the week of March 6th. Teachers will be educating all students about our Threats to School Safety Procedures and familiarizing students with proper terminology and what to do in each situation. You may wish to talk to your child/children at home about these situations as well.
Please feel free to call the school should you have questions.
