Millions of new residents to the gulf region has increased the demand for fresh water and created lots of sewage and waste which have been dumped into gulf waters or indirectly dumped by rivers draining into the gulf.
Oil drilling has brought oil spills that have ruined some beaches and destroyed some marine life.
