A Remote Learning Edition
Extending Grading Guidelines and Implications for Fourth Nine Weeks and Semester Averages
We are getting close to the end of the school year and hopefully adjusting to a new normal. As our area begins to open up slowly, we will still be in a remote learning situation for the rest of the year.
The guidelines for remote learning are extended until May 28, 2020. I will clarify a few points for you below:
1. Beginning May 4, âZsâ will be put in place for assignments that have not been turned in. We have noticed that a lot of students and parents have an incomplete view of class averages right now because blanks are in the grade book. A âZâ means that the student has not completed the work but still has an opportunity to do so. Because of that their score for the assignment is a zero until they complete the assignment.
2. Keep in mind that your grade this nine weeks cannot harm your average for the semester. However, it can definitely help you. If you had an A in Algebra II the 3rd Nine weeks you are guaranteed an A for this semester. However, the skills you are using in math next year can only be strengthened when reviewed - even in a remote learning setting. Keeping as up to date as possible will not hurt you when it comes to being prepared for next year.
3. That being said - school should not be a stressor. If you are unable to focus on school work because of issues going on - we understand. That is exactly why your grade for the semester cannot be lower than your third nine weeks grade. Keep your head up and just try to make tomorrow better than today.
These guidelines are in place until May 28, 2020 and include the following features:
1. Each class should only have one graded assignment per week (double blocked classes may have two graded assignments per week).
2. Weights for assignments are eliminated (Major v. Minor grades) so every assignment carries the same weight.
3. Everyone is exempt from final exams.
4. All submission deadlines will be through May 3, 2020 in Canvas but there will be due dates for assignments.
5. There will be no penalty for late work.
6. Students will be held academically harmless for the 4th nine weeks.
Being held academically harmless means that student averages for the 4th nine weeks cannot be lower than the average they earned for the third nine weeks. While this may open the door for some students to see work and grades as meaningless it also offers a very generous opportunity to improve semester averages if the third nine weeks grade was not where a student wanted it to be.
Students will still need to pass their classes for the semester to receive credit. The way averaging will work is as follows:
Example 1: 80 - 3rd Nine Weeks + 90 4th Nine Weeks = 85 Average for Semester
Example 2: 65 - 3rd Nine Weeks + 80 4th Nine Weeks = 72.5 Average for Semester
Example 3: 80 - 3rd Nine Weeks + 65 4th Nine Weeks = 80 Average for Semester
Verification of Enrollment for May
10th - 12th Grade Request for VOE
Please remember that in order to receive a VOE from the school, a student must:
- be currently enrolled and between the ages of 15 and 18
- have met the 90 percent attendance requirement for the semester preceding the date of application
- not have any financial holds at school (unpaid fees, lost textbooks, etc.)
**If a student is on the denial of credit list, we will not be able to issue a VOE until the student has made up lost time.**
VOEs will be available for pickup at the front office of the SENIOR CAMPUS for 10th - 12th grade students or the NINTH CAMPUS for 9th grade students on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am - 1pm. If you submit your request Wednesday through Sunday, your VOE will be available for pickup on Tuesday, and if you submit your request Monday or Tuesday, your VOE will be available for pickup on Thursday.
