November Already!?!
Dear Parents,
Thank you for another great week. I hope you enjoyed the weather last weekend. As we have seen throughout 2020, I saw evidence of innovation for this weekend's holiday- my favorite being the candy chute for socially distanced candy delivery. Lots of 2020 can move on, but this sort of innovation might just have to stick around! I can't wait to hear stories from this weekend's high jinx from students tomorrow and this week.
Over the course of the last few months, I have restated a few reminders in the hopes that they would remain priorities for all. Face coverings and mask remain a priority, clearly, but for this week I would like to bring our attention to the following:
- Bringing Items to SBMS: Beginning Wednesday, November 4th, SBMS will only allow the drop off of the following: chromebooks, assignments, books for Language Arts or medicine for the school nurse. Unfortunately, we are seeing too many families dropping off items to the front office that are unrelated to these things. The LearnSBISD plan indicates no drop off of items should be occurring and that visitors to the campus are restricted. As we watch numbers of parents dropping off items to our office and numbers of COVID cases tick upwards, we are tightening up our practices to make clearer what is of necessity and what is not. To ensure that your child has a back up plan for lunch, please visit SBISD Child Nutrition and put money on their account so they can purchase a lunch: https://www.springbranchisd.com/about/departments/finance/child-nutrition-services/payments-and-refunds.
- Health and Safety Reminder: One of the many unfortunate issues related to COVID-19 is that the signs and symptoms for COVID-19 can mirror other illnesses. Our LearnSBISD plan requires parents to complete a Health Screener for their students each morning and indicates that students must not report to school with symptoms delineated within that screener to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19. When a child visits with Ms. Mulvey, our SBMS Nurse, and presents symptoms that could be related to COVID-19 she must follow a protocol that involves presenting the symptoms and context for the child (duration of symptoms, if a parent has tested positive or exposure to someone else has occurred) to the SBISD Intake Nurse and then work with the family to send the child home for a period of time. We fully recognize how stressful the "here and now" is for all families, but ask that your interactions with our nurse are kind and patient. We are happy to ask questions on your behalf and answer any questions you may have, but please know the health and safety of all students, their families and our staff are at the forefront of all that we do at SBMS. This is a very difficult year to serve as a school nurse and we are so grateful that Ms. Mulvey chose this as her life's work.
Lastly, please be on the lookout next Sunday for details on our SBMS Veterans' Day Celebration. While adjusted this year, we are still creating time and space for our students to celebrate those who served our great nation this month. Details will come out next week in this newsletter.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!
Many thanks,
Stefanie Spencer
November 3rd: Election Day and At Home Synchronous Learning Day for SBISD
November 3rd is a scheduled remote learning day in observance of election day. The day will be considered a “synchronous” day.
- All students will learn from home on Nov. 3.
- November 3 is a regular school day and class periods/learning blocks begin live at their regularly scheduled time. Attendance is taken.
- Teachers will present mini-lessons or information so students may then transition to independent work thereby reducing time spent on zoom for students and allowing them to complete their work. Click here for the schedule.
- Zoom links will be posted into each itsLearning course (except BPT) by Monday.
- Please note that Bear Pride Time (BPT) will be a study hall and no zoom links will be provided. Students do not need to log into their first zoom until the start of Period 1 (9:14 a.m.)
News from the SBMS Library
Overdue Library Books
If you have library books from last year, please return them to the SBMS Library! We still have nearly 300 that have not been returned. Overdue notices have been emailed to students; books can be returned to the cart located outside the library. Virtual students can drop books off at the front desk.
Spelling Bee
The classroom spelling bee will be held on Thursday, November 12 during Bear Pride Time. In-person students will participate in a traditional spelling bee. Virtual students may participate by using a new online testing platform. In order to participate in the online test, parents need to enroll their child in the Scripps National Spelling Bee's online testing platform by visiting https://online-test.spellingbee.com. This video will walk you through the registration process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htXzjpnMijc Students wishing to participate in the online test will do so during BPT on November 12.
Copies of the spelling bee word lists are available via email from your BPT teacher or from Mrs. Silva; hard copies may be picked up from the library or the front office.
If you have questions, please contact Librarian Aaryn Silva at aaryn.silva@springbranchisd.com.
Updated Grab and Go Meal Schedule for SBISD- Ellection Day Meal Information
ELECTION DAY MEAL INFORMATION
Nov. 3 meals will be provided on Nov. 2.
- Tuesday, Nov. 3, is a virtual learning day with all students learning from home. Meals for distance learners and in-person learners will be distributed on Monday, Nov. 2 at the 10 distribution locations from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.
On Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3, we will provide Grab & Go meal distribution for distance learners only at four Grab & Go sites: Ridgecrest Elementary, Sherwood Elementary, Pine Shadows Elementary, and Meadow Wood Elementary.
SBISD Health Screener for In-Person Learners
Prior to the start of the school year, all families completed the SBISD Health & Safety Protocol Parent Acknowledgement Form. Included in these protocols is ensuring that every child coming to campus has a completed SBISD Health Screener every morning.
As a reminder, the health screener can be accessed via the district website (there is a blue box on the homepage titled ‘HEALTH SCREENER’ or by clicking here.) High school students may complete their own screener, but not those of their siblings.
Parents, it is critical that you report to your child's school if your child has tested positive for COVID-19, has had prolonged (15 or more minutes) direct exposure to someone who is COVID-19 positive, or is displaying symptoms of COVID-19. Please do not send your child to school. Please do complete the health screener and report to your school attendance office or nurse immediately. Please be sure to provide your contact information including a daytime telephone number where you can be reached.
View this video to see how to turn the screener into an icon (like an app) on your phone or tablet home screen for easier access:
See you soon! Stay tuned for messaging every Friday from SBISD!
