President’s Message for August
In my very short time as POM Chamber president (six weeks), I've been fortunate to meet many incredible members of our Chamber. I have received the kind of welcome that makes this Chamber stand out, and I am honored to work on the behalf of our business community.
Some of my first-year goals include increasing Chamber communication, boosting the social media presence for the Chamber and our membership, and offering the kind of membership benefits that will help us to grow together. I am also pleased to welcome three new members since my arrival. I know you will too.
Your ideas are important. Your feedback is critical. I encourage members and non-members to reach out to me as I get to know our membership.
We are launching some cool new member benefits. If you need access to a small conference room for a meeting, you can now book the Chamber's! This week we introduced Walkabout Wednesdays, as I travel the area to visit our member businesses and feature you on our Facebook page, which I hope you have liked and are following. You can also schedule a meeting with me at the Chamber!
We have a digital membership logo for you to post to social media and your website, advertising your POM membership. You can now sign up for Chamber event text reminders (below). Lastly, the success of our schools is vital to the success of our businesses in the region. Join the Pikesville Schools Coalition via Facebook to stay up to date on school news.
We are now looking for members to host and/or sponsor Brown Bag Lunches, Eat and Greets, and After Hours. Please contact me if you are interested. It’s great exposure for your restaurant and business. If you would like to get more involved with the Chamber—serving on a committee, assisting with events—e-mail the Chamber.
See you at the next event!
Sincerely,
Beth Rheingold
POM Chamber President

Jenette Young, President, opened ComForcare--Baltimore/Carroll in June of 2009. She has significantly grown the client base, caregiver support, and community footprint. Ms. Young has received many accolades, including recognition as a "Woman on the Move" by MyCity4HER. She told the organization that she "always desired to start my own business. I’d been in the retail food business for almost 30 years and I decided to move on and become an entrepreneur. I knew that my knowledge, experience, and passion prepared me for higher opportunities."
At ComForCare, the mission is to help people live their "best life possible." Whether due to illness, injury, or aging, ComForCare affords people the opportunity to live independently in their homes for as long as possible. They assist people with everyday activities (including personal care and companionship), while maintaining one's sense of freedom, dignity, and connections to friends and family.
ComForCare currently assists 125-150 clients per year. They hire a large workforce of about 100 caregivers and office staff per year. Ms. Young, who is a regular Brown Bag Lunch attendee, said, "We are proud of being able to service our diverse clientele, which includes our valued veterans."

Chamber Event Highlights
Summer has been hot for Chamber Networking and Events!
We enjoyed a Brown Bag Lunch at Strategic Factory this month, with Guest Speaker Bryan Fields from Costco. Bryan spoke about the importance of getting outside of your comfort zone and "boots on the ground." We had over 30 attendees and had to grab extra chairs for attendees!
Many thanks to Stanford Kitchen for hosting our highly successful After Hours event. We had close to 40 members and non-members in attendance. The service was impeccable, and the Chamber office received messages about the amazing hors d'ouevres. If you missed out on the crab cakes this time around, the Chamber will host another After Hours in January.
What's Happening in Pikesville & Owings Mills
Hobby Lobby plans to open in the Owings Mills shopping center in 2020, located at 10200 Reisterstown Road. (source: patch.com)
Bed, Bath & Beyond in Owings Mills is closing its doors. According to Fox 45, the Owings Mills store personnel attributed its closure to the lease ending at the shopping center and is not related to the closing of 40 other stores.
Mod Pizza has opened up in the former Corner Bakery location in Festival at Woodholme.
5 Below just held its Grand Opening at Mill Station at the end of July. A Giant Food Superstore will be opening the morning of August 16 in Owings Mills at Mill Station.

Tips of the Trade
Model the Way
Leaders establish principles concerning the way people (constituents, peers, colleagues, and customers alike) should be treated and the way goals should be pursued. They create standards of excellence and then set an example for others to follow. Because the prospect of complex change can overwhelm people and stifle action, they set interim goals so that people can achieve small wins as they work toward larger objectives. They unravel bureaucracy when it impedes action; they put up signposts when people are unsure of where to go or how to get there; and they create opportunities for victory.
Inspire a Shared Vision
Leaders passionately believe that they can make a difference. They envision the future, creating an ideal and unique image of what the organization can become. Through their magnetism and quiet persuasion, leaders enlist others in their dreams. They breathe life into their visions and get people to see exciting possibilities for the future.
Challenge the Process
Leaders search for opportunities to change the status quo. They look for innovative ways to improve the organization. In doing so, they experiment and take risks. And because leaders know that risk taking involves mistakes and failures, they accept the inevitable disappointments as learning opportunities.
Enable Others to Act
Leaders foster collaboration and build spirited teams. They actively involve others. Leaders understand that mutual respect is what sustains extraordinary efforts; they strive to create an atmosphere of trust and human dignity. They strengthen others, making each person feel capable and powerful.
Encourage the Heart
Accomplishing extraordinary things in organizations is hard work. To keep hope and determination alive, leaders recognize contributions that individuals make. In every winning team, the members need to share in the rewards of their efforts, so leaders celebrate accomplishments. They make people feel like heroes.

Maryland approved the Clean Energy Jobs Act 516 to increase the Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard (RPS) for electricity suppliers from 25% to 50% by 2030.
The Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard for electricity suppliers serving Maryland customers will increase from 25% to 50% by 2030.
The full article can be found in the Baltimore Sun and outlines the legislation and the Governor’s position on renewable energy.
Recently passed Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard legislation in other states and the District of Columbia, has resulted in immediate price increases of 14% to 18%. Based on recent competitive bids, CQI estimates the increase in Maryland to be similar to the District of Columbia.
