Update on Civic Responsibility
Kids Can Make a Difference
Two Kutz students, along with their teacher, Marybeth Tilghman, took it upon themselves to try and make a difference. The students were frustrated with the quality of the Oriole Pencils provided by the district. The pencils were difficult to sharpen and often broke in the sharpener. The erasers snapped off at the first use. Although the pencils were cheaper, the students found they were using two pencils and 2 cap erasers. They did a cost analysis and found that the more expensive Ticonderoga pencil was actually more cost effective. They wrote a letter to our wonderful Purchasing Department and lo and behold all, elementary school building were sent new penils: Wow: Kids really can make a difference.

Our 6th Graders will have the opportunity to participate in Bucks County Law Day on May 2nd. They will tour the Courthouse, jail cells, Sheriff's Department and Law Library and also participate in a mock trial.

BOOMERANG AWARD
This year, Kutz will continue to accept nominations for the Boomerang Award, which is our way of honoring students who best demonstrate their own developmental assets. What are Developmental Assets? Students possessing a combination of “40 Assets” are typically most successful in school and in life. These assets have the power to influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible adults. For a complete listing of the 40 Developmental Assets visit: www. Search-institute.org.
March: #28 Integrity. Young person acts on his/her convictions and stands up for his/her beliefs. Young person talks openly about what he/she believes in and values: they “talk the talk and walk the walk.”
Pay It Forward Activity:
The sixth grade students have partnered with the Bucks County Area Agency on Aging to spread cheer to needy shut-ins in our area for the holidays. In November, the students made snowman decorations, holiday cards, and breakfast bags filled with healthy treats. The donations were distributed to the elderly throughout Bucks County and were greatly appreciated. The students enjoyed the activity so much that we decided to do it again for Valentine’s Day. Each student made an adorable Valentine’s Day decoration and card. We were able to make over 100 breakfast bags for the agency and made 2013 awesome for someone else!
Kutz Jumping Beans
In its third season, the Kutz Elementary Jump Rope Team has been roping in audience attention with their precision choreography and athleticism during half-time shows at local high school basketball games and charity events. They have also performed at basketball games at CB East, CB West, and Delaware Valley College.
