Week 5 Update
We are wrapping up our fifth week of the school year. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
This was our third week with all of our face-to-face students on campus Monday-Thursday and everyone remote on Friday. We still have approximately 90%+/- of our students that have selected in person learning and this number continues to grow each week.
We continue with free breakfast and lunch for all and our athletic teams continue to compete. We encourage you to watch our teams utilizing our streaming network.
If you are reading this update you are most likely the reason we had a successful start to the school year.
- Staff have done an amazing job adjusting to all the new requirements and expectations.
- Parents have done an amazing job of support children on remote learning Friday's and ensuring to keep any sick children home.
As the old adage goes, "it really takes a village to raise a child" and together we keep moving forward in a safe and healthy manner. With each week, it is important to remember that we continue to be able to provide these opportunities to our students and families because everyone is doing their part, right now we need to remain disciplined and continue to follow all of our required protocols and procedures.
We continue to practice and teach our students to follow the 3 W's to reduce our risk of COVID-19. The 3 W's are:
- Wear a Mask
- Wash your Hands
- Watch your distance
As of right now, we can report there are no reports of new Covid-19 cases from our fifth week back at school. n fact, the Saginaw County Health Department from last Friday showed zero cases in the 48626 zip code for the age range of 0 to 19 years old.
Again, it is so important that we all do our part to keep our children and everyone safe. Please remember to complete a health screener with your child before sending them to school.
It is our goal to be back in school five days a week; we are currently operating in a hybrid model with Monday-Thursday face-to-face and Friday online for everyone. At this time, we are continue to review this format but have determined that if we continue along our current path we will be back 5 days a week with face-to-face instruction no later than the first week of November.
Right now, we will continue to have remote Friday's on October 2, 9, and 16 with the remaining two Friday's in October TBD (to be determined). We will communicate about our intentions regarding the future Friday's in my weekly update, no later then October 15th regarding October 23rd and 30th.
If you should have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
All the best,
Don Killingbeck, Superintendent of Schools
The following are lessons learned from this week.
- 95%+ of Hemlock parents would recommend our school district to their family and friends.
- We are all stronger than we ever imagined.
- Students and staff, continue to be excited about being back to school.

45 Years of Serving and Board Election
Life-long “Hemlockian,” elementary teacher, board member, and so much more has decided to step away after 45 years of service to the children and families of our community. Mary Ann Ling, followed in the footsteps of both her father, Dr. Alex Manzoni, and father-in-law, Dr. Kenneth C. Ling, with service on the school board, has decided not to run in the fall’s election.
Superintendent Killingbeck said, “It was always a pleasure to serve with Mary Ann Ling, she always put children first, was thoughtful in the decision-making process, and held firm when she needed to. I understand her decision, but her absence from the board table will create some big shoes to fill.”
This decision to not run created a vacancy on the school board and some interest from community members that desire to serve. School board elections are somewhat different than in the past when board members ran for specific seats and terms, candidates with the most votes will be elected to serve. This election cycle, we have five candidates vying for three seats at the board table.
Voters will see the following on ballot (alphabetical order);
- Bryan Conger
- Jason Fromholz
- Kimberly Hoeppner, incumbent
- Melissa Konop
- Matt Wesener, incumbent
The community can tune-in and watch our Virtual “Meet the Candidate” event on YouTube to learn more about the candidates.
The primary function of the school board is to set policy, develop goals, and review and adopt budgets (MASB). The board has one employee, the school superintendent.
BOY'S SOCCER OFF TO A GREAT START
Hemlock Public School District’s Varsity Boys’ Soccer team is off to a great start. Senior Ethan Vietti has already racked up 17 goals on the season. Other key players include Nolan Finkbeiner, Chayton Ross, Colton Marino, Jake Funka, Brock Rinz, and Josh Wardlow.
The Huskies benefit by having some good talent in goal, as well. Cayden Stark has had 36 saves. AJ Light and Clay Urbaniak have also been very successful.
“Our Varsity soccer team is playing strong with a 5-2 record, and are currently sitting in second place in our conference,” said Coach Joe Wardlow. “We have lost a lot of defense since last season and are having some growing pains, but the boys are learning quickly, and adapting to new formations and positions. Each game we gain more confidence and are looking forward to a very competitive district tournament.”
With the limitations on spectators, the district was able to install the NFHS Network on the soccer field to capture the games. It is a great way for grandparents, aunts, uncles, and Huskie fans to still see the game and cheer on the team.
“The NFHS Network provides our school with a high-quality video of the game. We are able to view the game live or On Demand. I have also used it to make highlight videos and share on our Facebook page,” shared Athletic Secretary Jamie Galbraith.
You can sign up for the NFHS Network by visiting https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/subscribe/retail.
There is a subscription fee of $69.99 for a year or $10.99 a month. Currently, for the fall season, you can view football, soccer, and volleyball home games.

The Band Marches On
Hemlock Public School District is committed to their mission and vision to innovate, collaborate, educate, a community of learners. Recently, the district released an internal proposal for the instructional staff to pitch ideas that would improve instruction and remote learning due to the changing landscape of education in this new era of handling COVID-19 and a world-wide health crisis/pandemic.
K-12 Music and Band Director Charles Bicigo made a compelling pitch that would not only improve remote instruction, enhance face-to-face, but would also save the district and the Hemlock Band Boosters thousands of dollars over the next handful of years.
Superintendent Don Killingbeck said, “I am very pleased that Mr. Bicigo demonstrates the forward-thinking that we need in our educators today. His proposal was thought-provoking and made good sense to support.”
Bicigo’s plan will enhance day-to-day instruction, remote learning, and allow him to be able to utilize software, and to arrange and re-write music to accommodate the changes in band instruction. This will allow him to generate the high school marching band drills, and save dollars during the process.
Former Band Director and new MS Principal Joshua Chase was equally excited for the program upgrade and anxious to see all the great things that Bicigo will do with the increased computing power.
“This is just another example of how Hemlock Public School District supports innovation and moving programs ahead,” said Principal Chase.
