NJROTC's hard work pays off
Recently, NJROTC had their first drill meet of the season competing against seven other JROTC units at Battle Ground HS. The drill teams displayed hard work and dedication - showing up early every morning five days a week for the past three months. They did remarkably well in spite of many of them being new or inexperienced. Way to go! Thank you to the Booster Club parents for their outstanding support!
- Color Guard #1 – 2nd Place: Irene Martinez-Diaz (rifle), Silas Elliott (commander), received 2nd Place among all team commanders, Raul Morales-Camacho (organization), Cierra Quidachay (rifle)
- Color Guard #2 - Elijah Englert (rifle), Keenan Moore (commander) 2nd Place among all team commanders, Logan McCaslin (organization), Josiah Alejo (rifle)
- Unarmed Drill Team – 3rd Place: commanded by Maleighia, Constantino 2nd Place among all team commanders

Highly Capable Program Referral
The Shelton School District is beginning the annual process of nominating/referring students for Highly Capable Program services.
Highly capable students generally possess the following learning characteristics [WAC 392-170-036]:
- Capacity to learn with unusual depth of understanding, to retain what has been learned, and to transfer learning to new situations;
- Capacity and willingness to deal with increasing levels of abstraction and complexity earlier than their chronological peers;
- Ability to make unusual connections among ideas and concepts;
- Ability to learn quickly in their area(s) of intellectual strength; and
- Capacity for intense concentration and/or focus.
Students identified as highly capable qualify for receiving services designed to meet their unique needs as a learner. These services might include:
- Grade Content Acceleration and/or Compacting
- Cluster Grouping
- Academic Enrichment
- Advanced/AP courses
Parents, teachers or other community members may nominate students. If you are interested, please follow these steps:
- Fill out the Parent Permission and Referral Form and the Teacher Nomination Form
- Return ALL completed forms to your child’s school office by Wednesday, January 19, 2024.

School-Based Health Clinic is open
Junior High and High School Families - The Mason Health School Based Clinic located at the Shelton YMCA is now open! Schedule your well-child or well-teen appointments today! Call 360-426-2653, select the option for Primary Care, and then YMCA scheduling. You can bring your sports physical forms with you to the well-child/well-teen checkup.
Are you eligible for our McKinney-Vento program?
You may be eligible for services if you or your family live in any of the following situations:
- In a shelter, transitional housing, motel, vehicle, campground, or on the street
- In an abandoned building, trailer, or other inadequate accommodations
- Temporarily doubled-up with friends or relatives because you lost your home, or cannot afford housing
- Living as an unaccompanied youth without your parent or guardian
- In the process of eviction or foreclosure
Some services offered to those in the program are Immunization assistance, Enrollment assistance, Free meal registration, School supplies/backpacks, PE uniforms, Clothing support, Hygiene supplies, School fees, Field trip or camp expenses, Laundry support, Transportation to and from the school of origin, Access to rental and utility assistance, Referrals to basic services (food, shelter, medical assistance, etc.), Bilingual support for Spanish speakers, And more!

Text Messaging
Did you know that you could receive school notifications as text messages? This includes messages about school closures, delays, low or negative meal balances, and more! Opt-in today by texting “Y” or “Yes” to 67587.
Student & Family Resource Center
Are you in need of something? We can probably help! Our resource center has a clothing bank with clothing for all ages. All of the clothing is either new or laundered before entering the bank. A household item bank may also have what you need: bedding, small kitchen appliances, and more! The newest addition to the SFRC is the food bank and hygiene bank. If you are looking for a community connection, the SFRC can help you connect with the right resource.

It is the SFRC's goal to help every family find the information and resources available to ensure the most successful outcome from their educational experience in their respective schools. Please consider partnering with us this year, and thank you in advance for your contribution.
If you would like to help keep our food bank and clothing bank stocked, the following are our 'high-need' items: maseca, rice, beans, individually packed snack items, baby clothing, elementary-school-age sized clothing, new underwear, and black leggings in all sizes.

Need Childcare?
The YMCA has space available in their before/after school program location at Bordeaux Elementary. Financial aid is available as well as transportation for Mt. View and Evergreen Elementary School students. Learn more on the South Sound YMCA website.

The State & Federal Programs Department offers services and resources to eligible students to eliminate the achievement gap between student subgroups. We are committed to connecting with students, families, and the community to provide the education needed to achieve academic and personal success. Get Involved
Volunteer in our schools
By volunteering your time, you may be asked to read a book to a classroom, help with a literacy activity, or more! Please expect to volunteer about one hour of your time. The school(s) you are interested in volunteering at will contact you with further details along with the required volunteer paperwork. We are very grateful for your interest and look forward to seeing you in our schools!

Huff 'n Puff Memorial
The Shelton School District is working with the Shelton Rotary Club to update the student memorial at the Huff 'N Puff trailhead. If you are aware of a high school or middle school student who was attending the Shelton School District and who passed away before reaching graduation, please reach out to Abe Gardner at 360-801-9555. We appreciate your help in making sure all students are honored.

School board meetings are held every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. Please check the district calendar for meeting locations.
Please note there is only one board meeting held in December on Tuesday the 12th.
