May 2023

A Message from Mrs. Hansen, Principal

I have enjoyed many wonderful years with Gaylord Community Schools and will be retiring at the end of the 2022-23 school year.

I have been so fortunate to have served as an educator in such a vibrant and supportive school community. Students, families and staff have been and are committed to learning.

I wish to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the entire SME family. Thank you for entrusting your children, our future, to South Maple Elementary.

All the best,

Therese Hansen

A Home for Humphrey?

South Maple students and staff have had a fabulous time reading The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney during April! We hope you have enjoyed reading the book together at home as part of our One School, One Book program. If you’d like to see some pictures, listen to the chapters, or find other fun stories and activities for your child(ren), the SME Humphrey site is still available at https://sites.google.com/gaylord.k12.mi.us/humphrey.

Hopefully you’ve also heard stories about Humphrey the (real) hamster who has been living at SME over the past few weeks. Well, now Humphrey is looking for a new place to live, and we’re sure a lucky student would love to take him home!

If you would like your child’s name to be entered into a drawing to win Humphrey, and are ready to give him a safe, permanent home, please fill out this Google Form by Friday, May 5. The winner will be notified in May and arrangements will be made for Humphrey to make his way to his new home! Good luck!

Summer Reading and Math Opportunity

GRASP is available again this year to help your child(ren) avoid the “summer slide”!

We have made arrangements to acquire the GRASP program for you this summer. GRASP is a correspondence program for grades K to 8 which helps students maintain reading and math skills while they are on summer break. Your child will receive a book with nine lessons. If they are completed with at least 70% accuracy and returned to GRASP, your child will receive a certificate and medal! The cost is $26 for one subject, or $48 for both reading and math.
