April 24: Grading, Learning Plans & FREE Training by Apple
Dear Staff,
Thank you for continuing to deliver and share engaging educational activities focused on reading, writing, and mathematics through the implementation of Learning Plans that were introduced following spring break.
I want you to know that our plan is to continue working through these Learning Plans
for the remainder of the school year so that our students are prepared for the next grade level or class that they will pursue in the fall. These plans have been carefully designed to support continued learning with flexibility and to focus attention on reducing the learning gap that could occur before the start of the 2020-2021 school year. You should also know that we will continue to monitor, evaluate, and adjust as needed.
Teachers will be grading Learning Plan activities based on the student's applied effort and a mastery level of understanding. Work completed satisfactorily while learning remotely, can help improve a student’s final grade. A student's final grade will not be lowered as a result of the learning activities that are being completed during this school closure.
Student grades can be reviewed on Schoology. If students and parents have questions or concerns about their grades, they should contact their teachers or principal.
Here is how grades will be recorded in Schoology.
Secondary Schools:
- For students who submitted work in the 4th nine weeks, the student's grade will be the same as or higher than the 3rd nine weeks. The semester grade will be the average of the 3rd and 4th nine weeks.
- For students who did not submit work during the 4th nine weeks, no grade will be recorded for the student for the 4th nine weeks. The semester grade will be the 3rd nine weeks grade.
Elementary Schools:
- For students who submitted work in the 4th nine weeks, the student's grade will be the same as or higher than the year grade. The year grade will be the average of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th nine weeks.
- For students who did not submit work in the 4th nine weeks, no grade will be recorded for the student for the 4th nine weeks. The year grade will be the average of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd nine weeks.
As we work together during this remote learning experience, we should make the goal of reducing the learning gap as important as the goal of flattening the Covid-19 curve. While our students won’t be penalized for performance during the pandemic, we should continue to reach them, stretch them, and have them strive for more, not less.
FREE Apple Professional Learning Sessions NEXT WEEK.
Hello Friends in West Virginia,
I am pleased to announce the Apple Professional Learning Webex Series, exclusively for West Virginia educators, is being extended into next week. The sessions have new times to meet additional educators' schedules.
Access registration here: http://s.apple.com/dE4n2u6g6v.
The Webex’s are facilitated by a team of on-staff Apple educators, many of whom are currently working with counties across the state. All of the sessions are free and there is no limit to how many you can attend. Interest and participation this week has been exceptional and we are very encouraged by the high degree of engagement and feedback from teachers.
We appreciate the opportunity to provide this forum to West Virginia instructors and please share this information with educators across your institutions. Looking into May, our APL specialists are already working toward developing new Webex content and anticipate updating you soon.
