D.A.R.E.
It's that time of year....D.A.R.E.! Classes will begin next week and will continue for a total of 10 weeks. Once a week, for 60 minutes, the students will receive instruction on how to make wise and healthy choices. This includes dealing with peer pressure, drugs, and alcohol.
Your child will bring home a contract for you to sign, informing you of what content will be taking place during D.A.R.E.. Please sign this form and return it to school with your child.
Each D.A.R.E. class will include homework, which is due at the next D.A.R.E. class. We have added a D.A.R.E. section on our homework page to inform you of weekly homework. Here is a link to our D.A.R.E. schedule so students know when homework is due.
At the end of the ten weeks of D.A.R.E., each student will need to write a one page essay explaining what they learned and how it will effect their lives.
Please mark your calendars for our very special D.A.R.E. Graduation Ceremony on Monday, March 13th at 6:00 . We would like ALL students to attend, so please inform your sport coaches, music teachers, and other activity leaders that this day is very important and that your child needs to attends their D.A.R.E. graduation. Thank you for honoring this request and making the necessary arrangements ahead of time. It is greatly appreciated.
Kindness for Kendra Fundraiser
The "Kindness for Kendra" Fundraiser is to help a PHS cheerleader from the graduating class of '16 who was recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). AML is a fast-growing form of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. The "Kindness for Kendra" fundraiser has been created so that Kendra's community, friends, and family can offer financial support. It is our hope that your generosity will lower the stress and anxiety caused by mounting medical expenses that are necessary and critical in fighting this aggressive cancer. Help us, help her with medical costs either with a cash donation or by participating in the "Kindness for Kendra" Cheer Clinic. The PHS Varsity Cheerleaders would like to invite all 5K-6th graders to come and learn new cheers, stunts, and a sideline dance and then join us at a Varsity basketball game to cheer part of it with them. If you can't participate in the clinic, please consider a donation. Checks can be written to PHS Cheer with Kindness for Kendra in the memo section. If you have any questions, please contact Anna Duerwachter at duerann@pewaukeeschools.org.

Six Flags Read to Succeed
Your child can read books, magazines, newspapers, or comic books. Reading for homework or a class assignment does NOT count. Late entries will NOT be accepted. It is important to note, that tickets cannot be replaced if lost, stolen, or damaged.
Language Arts
Our Coffee House was a huge success and thank you for helping with costumes, sending in treats and helping our poets shine! A fun time was had by all!
Your child has made a daily commitment and goal with their club members, agreeing on how much will be read each night. A gentle reminder to your child would be greatly appreciated.
In writing, we are continuing to build our stamina while we commit to daily journal writing and enjoy a few weeks of "free writing". There is a line up for author's chair; your children love to share their writing and enjoy the positive feedback.
Grammar and Spelling: Skills that we are covering this week are:
- exploring prefixes and suffixes
- adverbs
- vocabulary-building activities
- punctuating direct quotes
- synonyms/antonyms
- adjectives
Math
Students worked on multiplying fractions, whole numbers, and mixed numbers this week focusing on why this works. As a result, students understand why the standard algorithms work using visuals and showing each step in the process. When students are able to show their thinking they are increasing their number sense, which is crucial in high math classes.
On Thursday, students took their first quiz in this unit. Please take a look for this in their Friday Folder next week.
Next week we will be exploring how to divide wholes and unit fractions. Students will discover the importance of reading through word problems to correctly write their equations.
Social Stuides
Next week we will begin studying explorers, identifying how and why Europeans came to discover the New World. Throughout this unit students will identify who explored and if they were good men. In addition, they will identify the impact of each expedition.
