"We exist so children can excel."
What We're Learning in Challenge
3rd & 4th Grade
This Week's Share Topic: Movie Posters
We will be sharing the posters that we designed for our independent reading projects.
No sharing next week due to spring break.
We are finishing up our fractured fairy tales unit of study this week.
Good luck to the third grade students who'll be taking the IREAD assessment this week. I continue to assure the students that I believe in them and that they are so much more to me than a test score. Like the students I'm fortunate to teach, I'm pleased to put the standardized testing aside (at least temporarily) so that we might resume some normalcy in our days.
5th & 6th Grade
We are knee-deep in Countdown. This book is an amazing book for adolescents that infuses history and culture at every turn. The newest Social Studies buzzword phrase is "primary sources." Believe me, Countdown is more than rich in primary sources and lends itself to curiosity and research.
Speaking of curiosity and research...
I received some exciting news just today. I have obtained a grant through the Gilder Lehrman Institute of United States History to attend a summer institute all about the very content we've been learning in 5th and 6th grade Challenge. I will attend Rhodes University in Memphis, Tennessee this summer to heighten my knowledge of the Civil Rights Movement. I've always believed in lifelong learning, and it's important to me that my students regard me as a lifelong learner.
Sixth Graders Only
We need your help getting ready for our Carnival on April 29th. If you are willing to help, please send an item that goes along with our sixth grade basket theme: To the Beach!. Check out the list below to help you with ideas of things we could use in our basket! If you would rather donate money for us to purchase items to fill the basket, you may do that, too. We would like to have all donation items by April 25th, so we have time to put everything together for the Carnival. Thank you so much for your help!
Basket ideas:
- Beach towels
- Water toys
- Picnic supplies
- Outdoor games
- Bubbles
- Water bottles
- Sunscreen
- Bug spray
These are only ideas, so take these suggestions and run with it. We sincerely appreciate all your help!

Once again, the independent reading projects are outstanding. Thank you, parents, for the support you offered for this at-home endeavor. It is so appreciated.
