What is a transverse wave?

Particles in the medium moves back and forth at right angles to the direction that the wave travels. For example: the wave along the rope travels horizontally but the rope itself moves vertically up and down.

What is a longitudinal waves?

the medium moves back and forth along the same direction that the wave travels. for example, squeeze several coils together at one one of the spring than let go of the coils, still holding onto coils at both ends of the spring, a wave will travel along the spring. as the wave moves it looks as if the whole as if the whole spring is moving toward one end.
