ECE 315
Week 2
Tips and Thoughts from the Trenches ~
In chapter four, you will read about the cognitive benefits of a young child learning a second language. This second language is also acquired similarly to the first language. That means you can expect certain errors in morphemes or word endings at certain stages. Whether a child is learning a first or subsequent language, modeling and exposure is essential. Your role as a teacher is important. Your knowledge of the developmental stages will help promote healthy acquisition and prevent over recommendations for special education. In my role as an assistant principal, I've had to work diligently with teachers to make sure that students who were developing language were not misunderstood as have a speech impediment when errors were rather typical.
As you read this week, think about how your role as a teacher plays an important part in promoting acquisition of language.
Post #1-Theoretical Perspective Reflection
Read the three language acquisition theories: behaviorist, active construction of a grammar, connectionist, and social interaction.
Select one of the theories and explain its main components in a graphic organizer. You may choose to use the recommended website, Holt Interactive Graphic Organizers, to help you with the creation of your graphic organizer, or you can use the graphs/charts feature in Microsoft Word. In your graphic organizer, you must compare and contrast your chosen theory with the other theories listed above, highlighting the major similarities and differences.
The graphic organizer must include the theorist associated with the theory, a summary of what the theory states, evidence supporting the theory or evidence against the theory.
In your compare/contrast analysis of the theory, include the following: Similarities to other theories and differences from other theories.
* Remember that your graphic organizer needs to contain an APA citation for any source used, including the textbook. You can read more specifics on our course board.*
Post #2- Supporting Second Language Learners
Refer to our course for the details, but this second post is your chance to showcase what you have learned from chapter 4. Think about this question,"Can Preschool Children be Taught a Second Language?" What position do you take? Explain strategies that effectively support students who are learning a second language in a 300-350 word post. Read the rubric carefully so you include all components of this post for full credit.
