Second Step
Child Protection Unit
Welcome Families
- Personal Safety: Students will learn important safety rules, such as safety with guns, sharp tools, and fire, and when riding on wheels or in cars. They will also learn ways to help them decide if something is safe or not. Later in fourth and fifth grade, students learn to recognize when something is unsafe, report anything unsafe to an adult, and refuse to participate.
- Touching Safety: Students will learn about safe, unsafe, and unwanted touches (i.e hitting, pinching, hugging).
- Assertiveness: Students will have a chance to practice asking an adult for help, telling an adult about an unsafe situation, and being assertive to get out of unsafe situations. Students will also learn how to always ask a parent or person in charge first before going somewhere, doing something, or accepting something from someone.
In April and early May, all students will participate in three lessons related to the information above.
If you are interested in learning more about this unit, please see the unit posters and Home Links resources below. You might also view a slide presentation HERE and recording from family information session on April 2023 HERE (13 min).
