Mrs. Derrer's Science Classes
Where students learn how to advocate for their learning
Derrer Science Classes
I teach 5 Science classes, a Study Hall, and a Home Room.
I use guided practice and observational practices as my main method of teaching, which facilitates student learning. For example, students can work in small groups or in a lab setting on an activity I have set in place based on the instruction they have previously learned. This will allow for collaboration, real-life connections, along with corrections and guided support by me. By setting up the classroom in this manner, students are forced to think for themselves, make connections, and advocate for their learning.

Hours for extra help or a meeting
Monday - Friday from 7:15 am-7:45am or 3:05 - 3:15pm please email to schedule a meeting.
If you or your child have a concern please have your child talk to their teachers about the concern first, this is a great way for students to learn how to advocate for themselves. These are the expectations in sports and school for high school. If during their meeting the concern is not resolved, please feel free to email or set up a meeting to resolve the concern.
April 2024
ALL: Great job during Testing week!
6th Grade --> We will finish our Earth, Sun and Moon unit and next will be starting our Solar System unit. We are digging into the planets and gravity, and using our prior knowledge from 5th grade to make this unit speed along. Enjoy the video your students helped create on how they see kindness in our school and world.
7th Grade --> The students have plants now and we are trying different light intensities and water amounts to see which ones thrive more. This has been fun to watch them nurture the seed and plant! I hope they are talking about this at home too. We recently finished Photosynthesis and are starting Energy Flow in Organisms.
Enjoy scrolling through pictures below of labs!
Important dates:
April 24th --> Early out
May 28th --> Early out, last day of school
Skyward Codes
Skyward Key, here is how to understand what skyward means, if the title begins with the letters below:
W --> worksheet, can be corrected/completed for full credit
Q --> Quiz
T --> Test
P--> Presentations / Projects
L --> Lab with partner and guidance
BR --> Weekly Bell Ringers (we do these daily and they turn in once a week)
EP --> Ed Puzzles (these are assigned for students to get a review or preview of concepts we are learning)
Please use this key to help you and your child understand why their grade is what it is. I also post comments next to many grades, so please click on that for clarification.
Grade School Policies
Homework is an extension of the class activities. Students hopefully will use classroom time and/or homeroom to complete the work. Students will be given an academic intervention for incomplete assignments until assignments are complete. Below is our school late work policy:
Late 2 days --> 83% is the best grade possible
Late 3 days --> 74% is the best grade possible
Late 4 days --> 65% is the best grade possible
Late 5 days - end of quarter --> 50% is the best grade possible
Absent: If a student is absent 1 day, they get 1 day to complete. If a student is absent 2 days, they get 2 days to complete, etc.
