A Note from Mr. Nieslanik
As we move into 2018 I hope that our community can continue to improve, grow and have fewer misunderstandings of those around us who may have different backgrounds, beliefs and world views.
As I prepare for Winter Break I am looking forward to time with family, time away from Beaverton for a couple days, and time with a good book. My reading list is long and I hope to make a dent in the list! I hope that your Winter Break allows your family to have time together, and hopefully a good book (or two) will be read!
Until next time,
David
SRHS Receives $317,000 grant for Engineering and Computer Science Career Pathway
Southridge High School is excited to announce that they are a recipient of a $317,286 grant from the Oregon Department of Education to expand Career Technical Education opportunities within the area of Engineering and Computer Systems Information.
The goal of the grant submitted by Southridge High School is to “create an integrated program of study from middle-school to postsecondary education and employment. The three key stated outcomes of this project will be; to improve school infrastructure through the further development of our MakerSpace, to increase partnerships with local industry, and finally to strengthen our relationships with our feeder middle schools by offering training as well as materials to students as an entry point to the Engineering and Computer Science Pathway at SRHS.”
Southridge High School is working in partnership with Conestoga, Highland Park and Whitford Middle Schools to provide hands-on STEAM activities so when students enter high school they can immediately engage with career technical education opportunities. In addition, Southridge is intently working to provide learning experiences for historically underserved students so they have access to post-high school education and opportunities.

School & District Report Cards
School and district report cards for the 2016-17 school year are available at:http://www.ode.state.or.us/data/reportcard/reports.aspx. (Select Beaverton in the District Selection drop-down menu).
We welcome the opportunity to share this information with you on the progress we are making to improve academic achievement for each student in the Beaverton School District. We are making progress.
State report cards began fifteen years ago when the 1999 Oregon Legislature passed a law requiring every public school and district to receive a report from the Oregon Department of Education about how they are performing overall.
Like last year, schools did not receive an overall rating on their report card due to the state's plans to redesign the report card in response to new flexibility under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
School Breakfast Facts
A great breakfast program is offered at school every day!
School Breakfast Fun Facts:
It’s easy! Instead of running around in the morning trying to make sure your children eat a healthy meal, let us do the work. They can get a great breakfast at school, and there will be no dishes for you to wash!
· It’s affordable! If qualified, your child may be able to get breakfast at a reduced price or for free. If your child already eats a free or reduced price lunch, they automatically qualify for a free or reduced price breakfast.
· It’s tasty! Schools now have more variety to choose from when deciding what to offer your children for breakfast. Request a menu so you can view what your child may be eating at school.
· It’s good for the brain! Research suggests that not having breakfast can affect children’s intellectual performance (CDC).
Year End Donations
Participation is a key component in student success and achievement. Being a part of a team, club, or other after school activity makes high school fun and engaging. Having the correct equipment and supplies are key to the success of an activity.
Your donations help increase student participation, in and out of the classroom, by providing scholarships and a source of discretionary funds to support students as needed. Sometimes, as little as $5 can make a difference to a student, so all donations are appreciated.
Donations can be made directly to the Southridge PTO or through the online payment system. Donors have the option to assign their donation to a specific group or activity, such as performing arts, athletics, academics, IB testing support, or clubs.
We are very grateful for the ongoing support of our families and community in so many areas. Thank you.
Volunteer Corner
It is important to log volunteer hours. We are required to report these hours to the district, as they use the number of volunteer hours when applying for grants to get additional funding. Volunteer hours demonstrate the liveliness and vitality of our schools, and the support and involvement of our parents and community.
When you volunteer at the school during the day, please log in and out on the volunteer computer located on the long counter in the main office. If the computer is not working, please ask the office staff for assistance.
If you are volunteering after hours or off campus, you can record your hours from your phone or home computer. Simply log into your volunteer profile, click on the "hours" tab, choose "Southridge" , hit select, enter date/hours, and save. Volunteers can enter hours in bulk....the most important thing is to enter them!
A HUGE thank you to all of our volunteers for work well done and for making Southridge a great place for our kids.
Got an ASB Sticker?
Basketball season is upon us, and both our boys and girls teams are in the top five in state! The athletes are gearing up and working hard to bring us a great season filled with many exciting games.
If your student has not purchased an ASB sticker, it is not too late. An ASB sticker gets students into regular season BSD school games for free. (No valid for playoff games.) With a student admission fee of $4 per game, and about 15 games each for boys and girls basketball teams - plus swimming and wrestling matches - the $20 ASB sticker is a real deal!
If you purchase an ASB sticker online, print out the receipt and bring it to the business office to receive a sticker for your student ID card. Or bring $20 to the business office to purchase your sticker.
See you at the game! GO SKYHAWKS!

GOOD TO KNOW...
Recently, a growing threat has been preying on our students and we want to make sure all families are aware of it. If you are not fully aware of "Juuling" please read the attached article.
Juuls are the newest form of vaping and are targeted directly at teens (especially girls). We are seeing them at an increasing rate and they are simple to convert to marijuana oil (THC). You need only Google "Juul THC conversion" for a quick 2 minute how-to video.
Be it the nicotine intensity or the THC, the threat is real and growing. Please take the time to read this article with your student and know what to look for.
