Dear CDS Community,
It was wonderful seeing so many of you show up to Parent Teacher Conference to learn more about your child's development at CDS. If there were any teachers who you wanted to meet with but didn't get the chance, please feel free to make an appointment with them at a later date. We'd like to extend a special thanks to the high school students from the Interpreter Club for helping our parents and teachers understand one another.
This year's MS Talent Show is coming up on April 17th from 2:40 - 4:00 pm! We have many exciting performances to look forward. Parents or family members who would like to attend are welcome to do so.
Coming up next Friday CDS MS and HS students will hone their athletic skills at our annual Sports Day event! Students should wear comfortable athletic wear and a Dalton hoodie in case it's cold in the morning. We encouraged everyone to bring a refillable water bottle.

CDS MS Climate Survey (학교생활 환경 설문조사)
Three years ago CDS Middle School established the important goal of creating a more positive school climate and culture. To support this goal, we increased our focus on Social & Emotional Learning (SEL). Each Spring we have asked students, parents, and teachers to complete a Climate Survey to help us identify our strengths as a school as well as areas needing improvement. Your responses last year were enormously helpful as we set goals to guide the improvements we’ve made this year.
약 3년 전 CDS 중학교는 보다 긍정적인 학습 환경과 문화를 만들어나가자는 목표를 세웠고, 이 목표를 이루기 위해 사회적&감정적 학습(Social & Emotional Learning -SEL)에 관심을 두었습니다. 그 노력의 일환으로 학교로써 부족한 분들 뿐만 아니라 저희의 장점을 찾는 것에 도움을 받기 위해서 학부모님들께 School Climate Survey 를 작성해주시기를 부탁드렸습니다. 학부모님들이 작년에 보내주신 설문결과는 이번 학년동안 저희가 만들어낸 성과들에 다다르기 위한 노력에 좋은 길잡이가 되었습니다.

Adventure Korea Update (April 24th - 26th)
On Wednesday 4/10 we sent students home with permission slips, final itinerary information, packing lists, medical information forms, and the code of conduct.
Please be sure to review them carefully, and return the permission slips to the school on Monday, 4/15.
Once we've received all permission slips, we will send invoices for the Adventure Korea trip via email. If you have any question in the meanwhile, please contact the MS Office.
8th Grade High School Orientation

Mr. Park can answer any questions you may still have about the Math progression or other aspects of the CDS High School curriculum.
Sports Day 2018-19
Please remember that this will be a half day. Buses will depart CDS after lunch at 1:15pm. This is a day of friendly competition designed to encourage each student to reach their personal best, while building school spirit and a greater sense of community. As such, Sports Day is a mandatory school event.
Students who are absent on Friday must submit a document (e.g. Doctor's note) explaining the reason they are absent, otherwise they will be marked absent in PowerSchool.

MS Art Exhibition & Competition
Congratulations to Sieon Park for winning Director's Choice award, Sophia Lee for winning 3rd place, Erica Lee for winning 2nd place and Erica Jeon for winning 1st place. Winners were judged on their originality, viewer engagement, creativity, technique, and craftsmanship.

PTC Student Work Displays
2018-19 Battle of the Books @CDS
We welcomed teams from nine other international schools for a day of friendly competition and celebrating a love of reading. Although Dalton teams, Phoenix Fire and Phoenix Ice, spent three months preparing for the competition with coaches Mr. Baker and Mr. Cavasin, a team from KIS Pangyo ultimately became the champions of Battle of the Books 2019.
However, the Battle of the Books is not just about winning, and CDS students said they enjoyed reading the books and had fun at the competition. Congratulations to CDS teams for cultivating teamwork and sportsmanship, and putting their efforts towards becoming better readers!

Math with Mrs. Hinds
They started by imagining they were in the smallest possibly rectangular prism or cylinder shaped box they could fit into standing up. They then found the dimensions of this box with a measuring tape and the help of a partner. Soon they realized that one box wasn't a very good representation of the volume of their body. This lead to using more rectangular prisms or cylinders to represent smaller portions of their volume that were then added to find a total. In the end they had to use at least 10 different boxes to represent their body.
As a final fun twist I asked them to discover how many of themselves would it take to fill the classroom. They had to measure to find the total volume of the room then divide it by their own volume. They were surprised to see that it would take well over 1,000 of their own beings to fill the room! It was a real eye-opener!

Chinese class with Mrs. Wang
Surprisingly, the food they cooked was very colorful and delicious. They were not only able to provide Chinese cuisine, but also prepared tasty desserts. After finishing their project collaboratively, they shared their food and the recipes to different groups. Besides, they gave the different opinions and feedback to each other. Through this very meaningful annually project, students have learned and experienced how to be critical, collaborative, and creative learners.

7A & 7B's Long House
As Parent-Teacher Conferences are right around the corner, students spent some of their time during Longhouse working on evaluating their strengths and weaknesses. They analyzed current and past grades, reflected on previous projects, and predicted how the rest of the year was going to go. They also created a plan for improving one of their perceived weaknesses. While it is important for parents to check in with teachers regarding their child, it is just as important for students to self-reflect.
Afterward, students competed against one another in several relay races that promoted patience and grit. One of the most enjoyable was the "Conehead Race" where students had to balance a cone on their head for ten meters without it falling off. A good time was had by all!

Art Class with Mrs. Koetje
Clay Slab Building in the Art Room:
This week students have been working hard to complete their 3-Dimensional clay forms. Student used paper templates to cut shapes from clay slabs accurately assuring success. Additionally, students learned how to use our clay slab roller! It has been very exciting for students as they get to operate a new piece of equipment found in many professional art studios. In order for students to roll their clay through the slab roller they need to wedge their clay, a fundamental yet challenging skill, that removes air bubbles from the chunk of clay. Each grade level has done an excellent job following the necessary steps to be successful while wedging and using the slab roller.
