Curriculum Updates
Language Arts
In language arts this week we are reading How Groundhog's Garden Grew and are working on sequencing events. Our spelling and phonics pattern focuses on sounds for /aw/. We will also practice using context clues to figure out the meaning of a word.
Math
We are finishing topic 11 this week on solving story problems with 3-digit subtraction problems. The students are excited to begin topic 12 which is on measurement. We will start by estimating length then measure with inches then compare inches, feet, and yards. Next week we will move into the metric system. There will only be math homework on Thursday of this week.
Science/Social Studies
In science, we are observing our mealworms and the changes we see. We also planted our brassica seeds today and will observe those as well. Soon we will also have milkweed bug eggs to observe hatch and grow. In social studies, we will start our next chapter which is on how the community of San Francisco changed from a small town into a large city. This lesson also gives us practice using timelines.
We are keeping very busy in second grade and hoping spring weather is on the way to stay!
