News from the BSE Library!
BSE Library - February in Review
In between snow days and vacation days, students at BSE kept busy in the library last month. We shared inspiring stories in honor of Black History Month like Firebird, by Misty Copeland, and Beautiful Blackbird by Ashley Bryan (see related artwork by first graders on our bulletin board). Older students had Jacqueline Woodson booktalks and read the classic Each Kindness, a story that reminds us of the power of small acts of compassion.
Second and third graders continued digital citizenship lessons, learning about the digital footprint we leave behind when we’re online. Grades 4, 5, and 6 are starting to learn about giving credit when using other people’s work. What are the rights and privileges we have as creators? What is copyright? This learning ties into the research projects students are undertaking both in their classrooms and in the library.
Looking Ahead…
March will be an exciting time for us in the library, as we gear up for the book fair, happening during the week of parent-teacher conferences. In addition to holding this fundraiser, we will be celebrating our awesome community of readers in many different ways that week. Stay tuned for more information coming home in school newsletters!
Colrain Central Library Update
There are a few exciting things happening at the library at Colrain Central School!
First, families are encouraged to check out the diverse books from around the country listed in these Google Slides to celebrate Read Across America over the next several weeks. There are links to read aloud stories to celebrate the diverse voices of Americans from across our country. Let us know on Facebook what books you’ve read and we’ll see how many parts of the country we can learn about.
The other exciting event is the Tournament of the Books! Based on the March Madness NCAA Basketball tournament, we'll have different books face off against each other and we'll see which books get the most student votes to advance to the next round. The books are all about diverse women or girls to celebrate Women's History Month.
First and second graders will read the books together in library class. Older students can read them on their own after lunch or through our online library access with Sora. You can access Sora on our CCS library catalog to enjoy these books at home with your family, or use this link.
News from the Sanderson Library
Happy March! In the Sanderson Library, we are wrapping up our unit on research. Students created some wonderful products that reflect the research they conducted using online databases. Fourth graders used Google Drawings to make posters about local authors, while fifth graders also used Google Drawings to create “info cards” to draw attention to the nonfiction library stacks. Sixth graders used their research about a job or career to design mock business cards using a free online platform called Canva. They did great work! Younger grades are continuing to hone their Destiny Discover and library navigation skills.
March also brings back the Sanderson Academy Battle of the Books! Battle of the Books is a month-long book tournament between eight books from our library, where Sanderson students vote in three rounds to determine a school-wide favorite! This year’s Battle of the Books theme is based on Sanderson’s character virtues, C.A.R.E.S. (cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control). The bracket is hung in the front lobby of the school if you have a chance to take a peek. Let the games begin!
