As promised, here is some information regarding the 2018-2019 school year. We have two new teachers joining us next year, and several additional instructional assistants.
First, Ms. Kara Emberlin is moving to NP from Witch Hazel Elementary. Currently teaching a 4/5 split, Kara will teach 2nd grade next year, partnering with Ms. Job. She comes from Texas, but has been with HSD for 3 years, teaching 2nd, 3rd, and the 4/5 split. She is very happy to be moving out to our school and I know she will be a wonderful addition to our staff!
Next, we are excited to bring a program out to North Plains that we haven't had before. You may have heard of something called the "SLC" or Social Learning Center at some of our schools. This coming year, HSD has made the commitment to bring students that are displaced from their home feeder, (ours is Glencoe), by creating this opportunity in one school per feeder. Two of the existing programs are being split in half, and we will get some students from each that are in our attendance area.
An SLC is a program that supports students with a variety of needs, primarily social and emotional. SLC classrooms teach students the skills and strategies needed to be successful in the mainstream classroom and provides a safe space for students when challenges occur. We are fortunate to have found an amazing teacher for this program, Kristin Szmigulski. She will be supported by five instructional assistants that are coming to us with experience from other programs.
In addition, we are hiring a behavior support specialist that will work with students in the SLC, and also provide support for students in mainstream classes that may have challenges.
I realize this is new and many of you may have questions, so there will be a parent information night on Tuesday, May 29, at 6:00 PM in our library. Kristin and I will there to share more about the program and answer any questions that you have. The Hillsboro School District, and our staff, strongly believe that all students deserve to be included and all students have value and worth. Designing a program with the right people and supports is the key to a positive experience.
Our choir sings tomorrow at Oaks Park at 2:00 PM. it's going to be a beautiful day so come out and see us if you can!
Happy Mother's Day!
Becky
