York Avenue Family Newsletter - 1/2/22
Message from Mrs. Richardson
Dear York Avenue Families,
Happy New Year! Hope your break was relaxing and you're feeling a bit recharged. I'm looking forward to all that 2022 brings and seeing the students tomorrow.
As the temperatures drop consistently, we observe a "Real Feel" protocol for recess with students. If the temperature is below 32 degrees or there is rain, snow, or ice outside, students will have indoor recess. Please be sure they have coats, hats, and gloves.
Our Student Council food drive was a big success. Thanks for your generosity and helping to keep Manna on Main St. stocked for the holidays.
Warmly,
Dipa Richardson
Principal

NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION’S READ ACROSS AMERICA
This is a year-round program that focuses on motivating children to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources that are about everyone and for everyone.
Each month, books are recommended for elementary, middle grades and young adults around a theme. The titles featured include books that students can see themselves reflected in, as well as books that allow readers to see a world or a character that might be different than them.

January Counselor's Corner
2022 is here! While I find myself still processing much of what has happened over the past two years, I am always grateful for the fresh start that a new year offers. With New Year’s resolutions and personal goals set, there can be a lot of pressure on adults and children alike. Below is an article from The Center for Parenting Education which dives into the “happy” in Happy New Year.
One of my main focuses with students is that ALL feelings are acceptable and important. Many of us may have grown up with an emphasis placed on being happy and stifling difficult or uncomfortable feelings. As a parent myself, I know it can be difficult to sit with our children in sad or angry feelings. However, if we can work on accepting all our childrens’ feelings, we can teach them resiliency and coping skills which will come in handy as they grow and life throws curve balls their way.
This month we will begin guidance lessons in K-6 which center on celebrating diversity. Please look for letters coming home from me explaining what was taught and ask your child to tell you something they learned.
As always, please feel free to reach out with questions or concerns.
Take good care.
