Transition to Springton Lake Middle School - SPRING UPDATE
Hello, 5th Grade Families!
I hope that you are all doing well and that this final stretch of the school year is going well for your family and, in particular, for your graduating 5th grade student. Since my first communication with you in March, I wanted to share some updates and additional information about the transition process to middle school. Our goal is to keep you informed and to provide information that will allow for a successful and anxiety-free transition to 6th grade. I also know that many of you are making family plans for the summer and are interested in knowing the dates of some of our summer activities. Please take a few minutes to review this newsletter that was crafted specifically for families of incoming 6th grade students.
If at any point during the transition process we can be of assistance to you, please feel free to reach out via email or telephone.

6th Grade Transition Camp - Summer of 2021
An exciting and fun part of the summer for our incoming 6th grade students is Transition Camp. This is a voluntary, half-day program where students can meet members of the Springton Lake Staff, interact with classmates, and engage in a number of activities designed to help orient them to the school and to make them feel even more comfortable and ready for the first day of school. Transition Camp this summer will be held on Tuesday, August 10th AND Wednesday, August 18th. Each program runs from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The programs are identical and students are invited to attend one of the two sessions. Additional details, including a link to register for a session, will be provided to families in July. Please know that these sessions are optional and voluntary.
Student Schedules & Schedule Release Party
The scheduling process for next year will be guided by data and information provided to us by your child’s current teacher, and also information provided by you and your child. Students who currently receive special education, gifted support services, or supplementary reading instruction will have similar supports in their schedules at Springton Lake.
In late June, families will receive a course verification letter that will indicate the courses in which a student will be enrolled. Student schedules and team assignments will be made available to students and parents in August. Class schedules and information packets will be mailed home on Tuesday, August 17th. Students will also be able to gain EARLY ACCESS to their schedules by attending our annual Schedule Release Party on Monday, August 16th from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. The Schedule Release Party is a “block party” style event where students are able to pick up their schedules in person. Students can enjoy complimentary food, games, music, and an opportunity to socialize with friends. Additional details about the Schedule Release Party will be provided in early August.
Summer Reading Requirement
In an effort to keep students engaged in learning during the summer months, the Language Arts Department has established a summer reading requirement for all students - including our incoming 6th grade students. Students will utilize what they read as part of the introductory unit in their Language Arts classes this Fall. Specific information about the assignment, including a menu of book choices, can be found on our school's website.
Supply List for 2021-2022
Many parents like to get a jump on gathering school supplies throughout the summer - particularly as stores offer sales and special offers. Our teachers are currently updating the supply list and we will post it to our school's website by the end of the school year. While the list is subject to change slightly, it should provide families with a good, overall idea of what will be needed for 6th grade. Please keep in mind that we expect that students will use the swimming pool during their physical education class next year. They will need to have a school-appropriate bathing suit to wear at various times throughout the school year.
Optional Building Tours in June/July
Due to some of the limitations that are in place this year due to COVID-19, we will be unable to host our 5th grade students for their annual in-person visit in late-May. While our teachers will take this into consideration as they plan the 6th grade experience during the first days and weeks of school, we would like to offer two OPTIONAL opportunities after the school year ends for students to visit and tour the building. Tours will be held on Wednesday, June 23rd and Thursday, July 1st at 10:00 AM. The tours will be guided by one of our staff members and will last about 45 minutes. Due to space limitations, tours will be for students only. To register your child to attend one of the tour sessions, please use this Sign-Up Genius link.
