Welcome!

Welcome back to our first grade newsletter! We can't wait to share with you what we are learning in our classrooms. We had a great time honoring our Veterans at the Veteran's Day Program and discussing the importance of our heroes this week. We have also LOVED learning about out author, Pat Mora, in our First Grade Author Study! We hope our newsletter gives you a glimpse into what we are doing every day.

One more week until Thanksgiving Break! We will not have school the week of November 24th. We hope you enjoy this time with your family and friends.

Today is the last day of the 6 weeks. Report cards will be emailed on Thursday!

Readers, Writers, and Social Studies

In Reader's and Writer's Workshop we are focused on our author study! We are learning so much about Pat Mora and her reason for writing. She has taught us the importance of loving what we do and writing about things we enjoy! Recently we have read books like Listen to the Desert, The Race of Toad and Deer, and A Birthday Basket for Tia. We have discussed how we all have connections to Pat Mora's stories and can relate to her writing. We have focused on our own opinions of books and why our opinions are important. We have even written our own poems based off of poems by Pat Mora! Stay tuned for our new Standards Based Bulletin Board outside of our classrooms all about our author!

In Social Studies we did activities related to Veteran's Day and why it is so important for our country. Some classes had special visitors from the military and other classes wrote letters to our Veterans to tell them THANK YOU for all they do. If you are a Veteran and have served or currently serve in the military, we APPRECIATE YOU!!! This week and next week we will start talking about Thanksgiving and difference in events that happened "then and now!"

Math Workshop

In Math Workshop we are starting to learn how to TELL TIME! Right now we are focused on telling time to the hour. We are excited to hear students reading clocks throughout the school. We want all students to know the difference in an ANALOG and a DIGITAL clock and the purpose of the minute and hour hand. Practice telling time with your students at home on your wall clocks, watches, phones, alarm clocks, and anything else with the time on it! We are also continuing with our math fluency games to practice using our strategies!

Science

Last week we finished our science unit on motion! We discussed roller coasters and how they move, different types of motion, and why motion is important in our every day lives. We are now talking about SOIL! What are the different types of soil? What are their properties? How do we use soil to grow things? We are figuring out the answers to all of these questions throughout our soil unit by exploring soil and talking about soil every day in science!
