Clio Middle School
December 2021
December 3, 2021
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The events over the past week have been difficult, to say the least. The community of Oxford is grieving the loss of 4 of their students, and the mental and physical injury to many more. This has brought with it an immense amount of anxiety and fear to schools around the state and throughout our community.
As you know, the district was closed on Friday. This closing was intended for staff and students to decompress and spend time with their families. We would like to reiterate that the district has not received any credible threats and the safety and wellbeing of our students remains the number one priority. Below are the proactive safety measures that our district employs:
ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) training for staff
Controlled entrances with video surveillance
NightLocks for classrooms
Regularly practiced safety drills
Adult supervision throughout the entire school day in all areas
Mental health resources for our students including Social Emotional Learning
As a school and community, we need to work together to emphasize the appropriate use of social media. We respectfully ask our students, parents, and community to stop sharing threats. This leads to duplicative reports that tie up resources and may distract from the needed investigations. Please provide all information, or tips, directly to law enforcement, OK2Say, and/or the Clio Area Schools Administration. The important thing to remember is that if you or a student hears something, they need to say something to an appropriate adult. Please take some time to have a conversation with your child. This link includes suggested points to emphasize when talking with your children, taken directly from the National Association of School Psychologists article entitled, “Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers”:
Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we navigate this situation. Please keep an open conversation with your student(s). Encourage them to speak with staff as soon as possible if there is a concern because that is the most efficient way to move us toward the proper actions. Know that we are here to continue meaningful conversations, but also to support your student socially and academically.
Sincerely,
John Lanyi
Clio Middle School Principal
