Mr. Glover's Weekly Update

Mr. Glover's Weekly Update
I hope you have all had a restful three-day weekend, Raider Families.
BMMS would like to offer special acknowledgement to all of our military families this weekend as we celebrated and acknowledged Veterans Day on Friday of last week. We wanted to say, “Happy Birthday” this year to those members of the Marine Corp as they are celebrating 248th years. Semper Fi! A heartfelt, “Thank you” to all of you that have served or are serving for your service, sacrifice, and commitment in your call to duty, honor and country.
As we begin our next trimester and are provided somewhat of a RESET for the school year, this is also a reminder that we are in our final week of school before the Thanksgiving break and a real opportunity to relax and clear our heads with family and friends.
We want to acknowledge and join our families that will be celebrating Diwali starting today. “Diwali or Deepawali, known as the ‘festival of lights,’ will be celebrated for the next 5 days all over the world. The holiday is celebrated by millions of Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and others all over the world. During Diwali, lights are symbolic of this festival with people setting off sparklers and fireworks to fuel the inner light that spiritually protects them from the darkness.” So, we want to wish everyone a joyful Diwali today. To learn more about the holiday of Diwali, please visit this link for more information about the history and culture of this annual event. May your Diwali be free from darkness and abundant with light.
Just a few highlights of some upcoming events for next week.

Please complete the free/reduced-price meal application!
Although school meals are now free to all students, the application for free and reduced-price meals is still very important. School funding depends in part on the number of students at our school who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. With all students now eating for free, fewer families are completing the application and our school is at risk of losing much-needed educational funds. Plus, students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals may also qualify for discounts on bus transportation, before and after school care, and home internet!
Income qualifications change annually, so a new application is needed every school year. For school year 2023-2024, children from a family of four are eligible if the total gross (pre-tax) household income is less than $4,625 per month, or less than $55,500 per year. Household income information is confidential and applying online is quick and easy. Apply online at MySchoolApps.com, or pick up a paper application in the school office.

Attendance Information
Daily Attendance
When your child is absent from school, please be sure to call our attendance hotline at 484-1300 option 1 by 9:00 a.m. on the day of each absence. This call must be made by a parent or legal guardian. Please be aware that, per district policy, 12 absences within a school year are considered "excessive". If it is suggested by a physician that your child stay home from school due to illness, please be sure to obtain a medical note and turn it into the attendance office upon the student's return to school. It is recommended that all medical notes be processed within 5 days upon your child's return to school. This will assist us in accurate record keeping. Absences that are cleared with a medical note do not count towards the district's "excessive" absence policy. For each day of absence, the student is granted an equal number of days to make up the work. Parents should request assignments from teachers or by checking MyPlan.
Should there be a planned absence of five days or more, please see the attendance assistant as soon as possible to set up a homework contract. This contract allows the student to complete work that they would be doing if they were in class and helps the school continue to receive funding from the state. A contract should also be used for extended illnesses, planned surgeries etc. A minimum of five days is required to set up an OCIS contract; a week's notice or more is required. Home tutors may be appropriate for some extended medical problems. Please notify us as soon as possible if you feel your child may be eligible for such support.
Activities
Students must attend school on the day of an after-school activity in order to attend/participate in the activity.Students Tardy to School
Frequently arriving late to school ensures a student will miss valuable instructional time and will negatively impact their education. Please assist the school in ensuring your child receives the education they deserve. Students arriving late to school must report to the Attendance Office with a phone call to the attendance hotline from a parent or guardian explaining the reason for arriving late. Parents may excuse up to 3 tardies per semester, additional tardies will result in additional consequences from trash pick-up to In School Suspension.Students Tardy to Classes other than Period 1
- Students have 4 minutes to move from class to class. Students are expected to be in their seats prepared to learn when the bell rings.
- Students tardy to class will be assigned a detention by the teacher to be served the following day. A detention slip is given to the student as notification to the parent with a duplicate copy sent to the office.
- Students with more than six tardies will be referred to the Assistant Principal for disciplinary action which may include additional detentions and the loss of privileges.
- Students staying after class for any reason must obtain a pass to their next class which states the exact time they left before going to their next class.
Early Release
If you need to pick your student up from school before the end of the school day, please call the attendance hotline before school on that morning, specifying the time you will pick them up, so that we can have them in the office waiting for you. If you determine during the day that you will need to pick up your child early, please, call (858) 484-1300 extension 3906 as soon as possible. This will prevent delays for you (such as trying to find your child while he/she is running cross-country) and will help us to minimize interruptions to the classroom learning environment.Cultural Heritage Celebrations for the Month of November
During our cultural celebrations for the month of November, we at BMMS would like to honor a significant person or event that has shaped each of these distinctive areas of focus. We hope to inspire everyone to challenge themselves to learn something new this month in an effort to increase our knowledge and understanding of culture and come from all of the diverse members of our school community.
Kumeyaay Indian Nation
The Kumeyaay, referred to as Diegueño by the Spanish, were the original native inhabitants of San Diego County. The Kumeyaay, Yuman-speaking people of Hokan stock, have lived in this region for more than 10,000 years. Historically, the Kumeyaay were horticulturists and hunters and gatherers. They were the only Yuman group in the area, the first people who greeted the Spanish when they first sailed into San Diego Harbor with the Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo expedition of 1542.
The boundaries of the Kumeyaay lands changed with the arrival of the Europeans. It once extended from the Pacific Ocean, south to Ensenada in Baja Norte, Mexico, east to the sand dunes of the Colorado River in Imperial Valley, and north to Warner Springs Valley. North to northeast, their territory was bounded by other Indian nations––the San Luiseño, Cupeño, and Cahuilla.
Today, Kumeyaay tribal members are divided into 12 separate bands: Barona, Campo, Ewiiaapaayp, Inaja-Cosmit, Jamul, LaPosta, Manzanita, Mesa Grande, San Pasqual, Santa Ysabel, Sycuan, and Viejas. One of the largest owners of land in San Diego County, Kumeyaay governments have jurisdiction over approximately 70,000 acres concentrated in East County from El Cajon, Lakeside, Poway and Ramona, to the desert. Of the total acreage, more than 15,000 acres are unusable to the Kumeyaay because the El Capitan Reservoir was removed from Indian Government ownership. The reservoir feeds the San Diego River east of Lakeside and is located within the Capitan Grande Indian Reservation, which is jointly patented to the Viejas and Barona Bands. https://viejasbandofkumeyaay.org/viejas-community/kumeyaay-history/#:~:text=Today%2C%20Kumeyaay%20tribal%20members%20are,Ysabel%2C%20Sycuan%2C%20and%20Viejas.
Manzanita Band of the Kumeyaay Nation
The Manzanita Reservation is located in southeastern San Diego County, California. Manzanita adjoins Campo Indian Reservation on the south and La Posta Reservation on the west. It is about 67 miles east of the city of San Diego on Interstate 8; the town of Boulevard is six miles away. The reservation lies within 10 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border. The reservation was established on 640 acres in 1893 under authority of an Executive Order of 1891. The land base was increased by Departmental Order in 1907, and it is held in trust by the U.S. government.
Members of the Manzanita Band belong to the Kumeyaay Nation. The Kumeyaays’ traditional territory extended north and south of the Mexican border from the Pacific coast almost to the Colorado River. The Kumeyaays are speakers of the Yuman branch of the greater Hokan linguistic family.
All tribal members 18 years and older make up the general council which governs the tribe. An executive committee, which consists of the tribal chairman, two committee members, and a secretary-treasurer, is elected by the general council to run the routine activities of the tribal government. The tribe is organized under an IRA constitution and bylaws approved in 1976. In addition to the administrative department, the tribe maintains a housing committee and grants management office. https://sctca.net/manzanita-band-of-the-kumeyaay-nation/

BMMS Reporting Harassment Form
If your child should have any concerns involving harassment or any other incident that requires adult intervention, please encourage or work with your child to speak with a trusted adult on campus a soon as possible. Additionally, your child and you can also utilize the BMMS Reporting Harassment Form. We encourage our students to Say Something if they See Something and this is a great tool for doing exactly that. Our administrators are available to assist any student with a concern on campus, however we need to be informed about the incident as soon as possible to have an effective and positive outcome. If your student cannot meet with an administrator or trusted adult on campus immediately, The BMMS Reporting Harassment Form is an appropriate alternative. This form can also be found on the homepage for the school as well.
