The Hoot Owl

* RETURN TO SCHOOL - Besides the first day of school, this is my second most favorite day of the year - the day students return to school. Believe it or not, they have grown, matured, and changed over the past few weeks. I've missed their smiles, the warm hugs, and their excitement for learning. I'm so excited to see them all back.

*JACKETS - We have accumulated quite a few "lost" jackets. These will be donated at the end of January if they have not been claimed. Please ask your children to look through them as they enter the gym and ensure that they claim anything that belongs to them. Also, please make sure your child's name (even if it's the last name only) is written on the tag inside their jacket. This will help us return lost jackets to their owner.

*REPORT CARDS - Report cards will be sent home in Tuesday folders next Tuesday. Please watch for them to come home. If you have any questions about your child's grades, please make sure and contact their teacher.

*FRONT OFFICE CHECK IN - Each semester we "purge" the check in system in the front office. It is important that you bring your identification with you every time you enter the building. Since we purged, no one is in the system.

*PTO MEETING - PTO will be held on Thursday, January 10 @ 9:30 in the lounge.

*PTO SPIRIT NIGHT - Will be held at Chuck E Cheese on January 24 from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m.

*CHANGE OF TRANSPORTATION/PICK UP EARLY - If you have a need to change your child's transportation, the best option is to send a note to the teacher the day of the change. If it is an emergency and you need to change during the day, the cut off for that change to be effective is 2:30 p.m. If you need to pick up your child early, you will need to be in the front office no later than 2:45 p.m.

*YEARBOOK ORDERS - Yearbooks are now currently selling for $26 each. They can be purchased at the link below.

MORNING NOTES - If you are choosing to park and drop off your children, it is important that you park in a parking spot and walk your child to the door. Avoid parking behind someone, thus blocking them in, or parking in the entrance/exit to the parking lot. We do recommend that you drive through the line to drop off instead of parking and walking the child to the front.

AFTERNOON NOTES - Remember that you must enter the car rider line from Oak Ridge School Road instead of our driveway.

REMINDER - Don't forget when you are in the car rider line, it is against the law to be on your cell phone. (Not to mention that it is dangerous to our staff and students who are on duty.)

Big picture

An Attendance Boundary Committee (ABC) was formed this year for the purpose of creating the attendance zone for Suchma Elementary, a K-6 campus that will open in August, 2019 in the Harpers Preserve neighborhood. After several meetings of reviewing community feedback and input and evaluating dozens of possible scenarios, the ABC has released the scenario that it intends to recommend to the Board in January at

When the decision is finalized, we will communicate further.

PTO has several officer/board meeting at large positions open at this time. They are in need of parents to fill these positions. If you are interested in helping, please contact MaryBeth DeMott, PTO president @

Spirit Night is Thursday, January 24 at Chuck E Cheese from 5-9 p.m. Please come out and join the fun while supporting PTO.

Several of our students are collecting charges for breakfast and/or lunch meals. Parents are notified of charges in writing on a weekly/monthly basis. We encourage you to resolve these charges as quickly as possible. If you have questions about them, please contact the cafeteria manager by calling the front office and asking for the cafeteria.

Free/reduced applications can be located at the link below. Mrs. Vera, our registrar, can assist you in completing this form should you need assistance.

Attendance is very important for student learning. Our daily attendance goal is 98%. Currently, we are running, on average, about 96%. Please help us reach our goal by sending your child to school daily.

Official attendance time is 9:00 a.m. If your child arrives after 9, he/she will be counted absent for the day. Tardy time this school year is 8:01 a.m. If your child arrives after 8:01, the parent needs to walk the child into the front office and sign the child into school.

It is just as important for students to remain at school all day as it is for them to be on time. The 20 minutes missed frequently at the end of the day do add up and cause students to miss important information for their learning. Please allow your child to stay at school all day unless there is an emergency.

Thank you for help with these matters!
