Pine Cone Reading Program
From the iCenter:
We are excited about the launch of our Pine Cone Reading program for first and second graders!
Watch your email & check your child's backpack on Tuesday, January 18th for the release of our Pine Cone Book List!
There are some fascinating new characters to meet & places to explore. We will be using Canvas to record student participation & earn BADGES once again this year!
We have amazing support from the West Bloomfield Township Library. WBTPL makes books available "on deposit" at our school for Doherty students to check out from the iCenter. We encourage you to visit the WBTPL Main Library Location & the West Acres Branch to borrow the Pine Cone books. They will be on the shelves starting January 18th.
The count down is on... More information headed your way Tuesday, January 18th.
Thank you!

Capturing Kids Hearts Character Traits
What is Respect?
Respect is the willingness and ability to act professionally and thoughtfully with ourselves and others. Leaders can deal respectfully with opposition and provide space for both dignity and differences to coexist.
Why focus on Respect?
- Respect contributes to a positive culture. People feel safe, supported, and engaged in the context of thoughtful social, emotional, civic, and intellectual interactions.
- Respect decreases conflict. Respect helps us, and others, to be able to express ourselves without fear of being judged, humiliated, or discriminated against.
- Respect encourages empathy. Respect helps us to understand each other and put ourselves in someone else shoes.

Tools for Families to Talk to Their Children
For families seeking a way to talk with their children about recent events, you may access the following resources as a starting point:
Non-specific safety conversations may be more appropriate for younger students and may begin with presentations like the following on the Johns Hopkins site: “Talking to Your Children About Safety” for children in grades K-2 and children in grades 3-5. Using children’s books that use the power of narrative to teach valuable lessons is also a developmentally appropriate method to help our young one's process information. Some examples include the following:
The Rabbit Listened. A child has their castle wrecked and animals come and talk to her to give her advice. The rabbit comes to listen to her and she shares her feelings and gets brave to build the castle again.
After the Fall. Humpty Dumpty gets the courage to climb the wall again.
