Requirements for Extended Classes
Language Arts 6 or Extended Language Arts 6
Student's SOL scores in Language Arts play a large part in whether or not students are placed in Extended level courses. In addition to reviewing SOL scores, recommendations will be given by 5th-grade teachers based on academic performance in Grade 5.
Student placement will be determined by the following criteria:
1. 5th-grade teacher evaluation of the following: Can work independently and at an accelerated pace, can accept challenges, uses critical thinking skills, and actively participates in class.
*If you are choosing an Extended class in Language Arts, we want you to know that we will be consulting with your son/daughter's 5th-grade teachers and counselors.
Math 6 or Math 6 Extended
Math 6 or Math 6 Extended

ART

**We have 4 ART TEACHERS at Rippon. They cover the same grade level objectives but do different projects. Each teacher will have an emphasis on either: Painting, Sculpting, or Digital Art.
This is a 9 week course for 6th and 7th grade students, and a semester long course for 8th grade students
Throughout the course we will use a variety of materials and processes. We will complete lessons on drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and collage/textiles. Students are graded on in-class projects, and class work such as practice sketches and notes. The art department supplies most art materials, except for a sketchbook, pencil, and eraser which students are required to have for each class.
DIGITAL ART
In Digital Art class students will explore the new age of art using contemporary media. In the modern art world, digital art is a platform which is rich in career opportunities. The skills learned in this class will give students a boost in learning career skills such as graphic design, illustration, game design, 3D modeling, and animation. The course aligns with the PWCS standards and will give students the opportunity to explore their personal interest in digital art.
Lang and Lit: Language and Literature is designed to reinforce grade level standards of learning through the application of skills via authentic literacy experiences. During this course, students will demonstrate their understanding of a variety of forms, genres, and techniques through the examination of models and exemplars from contemporary sources and the creation of their own products. The topics of journalism, public speaking, digital composition, and an inquiry-based project are designed as standalone quarterly courses which may be taken individually or in sequence throughout the year. This course will support learners of all abilities in grades 6,7, and 8.
Reading Strategies: Reading Strategies is designed to guide middle school students to improve their reading comprehension, along with writing, listening, fluency, and decoding skills, as needed. This is achieved as students read, write, and collaborate with their peers, in a small-group setting of up to 12 students, using authentic text and direct instruction. Students will learn and use strategies for comprehending both nonfiction and fiction text, as well as strategies for vocabulary development. These skills are vital as the students gain confidence to become independent readers, writers, speakers, and thinkers which improves comprehension across curriculum This course is designed to support students reading well below grade level.
Creative Writing: Creative Writing is a project-based course that engages students in a recursive writing process. Students explore methods for generating and developing ideas, adapting ideas for different audiences and formats, cultivating their voice, and editing their work for publication. In addition to supporting the English Standards of Learning in grades 6-8, this course develops students’ creativity, ownership of writing strategies, and metacognitive thinking. This course will support the eager writer wanting to expand their skillsets and creativity.
