Seeking Artwork for Design Challenge!
Is your child a future artist? If so, let them know about LCPS' new Design Challenge taking place from March 29th to April 29th. This Design Challenge is a great opportunity to engage your students and support their creativity. Artwork may be used across the Division and its buildings for display, chosen to inform the development of a new logo design, be used on the LCPS website, social media sites, business cards, letterhead, digital communications, posters, promotional materials or anywhere else LCPS chooses. Please see the Challenge Guidelines for more details. Artwork or designs should be submitted through the online Challenge Form 2023. The Design Panel will review artwork in May, with winners notified in early June. If you have any questions, please email designcontest@lcps.org.LCPS is partnering with BrightBytes, a data analytics organization built specifically for K-12, to provide insights into our new and changing learning environments with the goal of improving learning outcomes for ALL students. As part of this initiative, we will be distributing a survey to capture your perspective around your child’s classroom support and resources (e.g., access to technology, instructional support at school and at home, student social-emotional competencies, etc.). Your participation is extremely important to us. It will give us a comprehensive understanding of our students’ needs and opportunities for improvement at our school. Your responses are completely anonymous, and the survey will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.

Student Handbook Spotlight
As a reminder of school procedures, a portion of the River Bend Student Handbook will be featured in our weekly newsletters. Please see expectations regarding Late Arrivals to School and Early Dismissals (page 10) below from the RBM Student Handbook. Thank you!
Late Arrivals to School
- A student who arrives at school after the official start of the day (8:50 a.m.) must report to the main office. After leaving the main office, students are required to sign in at the house office.
Early Dismissal
- Students are never to leave the school building or grounds without official written permission. Students may be officially released to a parent or guardian during the school day for one of the reasons given for excused absences.
- A parent or guardian must sign his/her child out in the main office.
- Because our administrative assistants are involved with transportation at the end of the day, early dismissals after 3:20 p.m. will only be allowed in the case of an emergency.
School Attendance
What do I need to do if I am unable to attend school for the full day?
A parent or guardian must contact the school to report an absence, tardy, or early dismissal. There are two options for reporting school attendance:
- A parent or guardian may call the school’s 24-hour absentee line at
- (571) 434-3222.
- A parent or guardian may report the absence, tardy, or early dismissal in ParentVUE.
What are some examples of excused absences?
Personal illness, medical/dental appointment, religious holiday, court appearance, or death in the family.
What are some examples of unexcused absences that may involve disciplinary action?
Skipping school, skipping class, or excessive absences (10% or more) without documentation from a licensed physician. For students with five or more unexcused absences, an attendance plan is required. Additionally, the attendance officer will file a complaint with the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court (Code of Virginia §22.1–258).
Do students need to turn in a doctor’s note when missing school?
No. However, students who miss 10% or more of school are required to turn in documentation from a licensed physician in order for the absence to be excused.
