ePortfolio
Congratulations! Your child will be participating in the GCISD student ePortfolio project!
What are Student ePortfolios?
Basically – an ePortfolio is a collection of student created work that is saved online – BY THE STUDENT. Teachers and parents may comment on their student’s work – but the eportfolio is student centered. The student decides what best represents himself or herself as a learner.
Why create Student ePortfolios?
Like any portfolio, an ePortfolio provides the basis for authentic assessment since it paints a picture of student growth overtime. ePortfolios promote student self-reflection and the idea that student work is valuable beyond the classroom and outside of the 10 months they may spend in a grade level. The student’s ePortfolio will be a valuable tool throughout his or her academic career – and beyond. As a part of LEAD 2021 Strategy 6:
Strategy: We will integrate technology, including student mobile wireless computing devices, into every aspect of the student academic experience to support the GCISD mission and strategic objectives.
Specific Result: GCISD will provide a network service for student created digital portfolios that will follow the student throughout his or her schooling in GCISD and beyond.
What will students put in their ePortfolio?
Any evidence of student progress is open-game to put into their ePortfolio. Things your child may include in his or her ePortfolio could be (but are not limited to):
• Pictures of student created work
• Videos or multimedia, created for school projects
• Hyperlinks to student projects created online
• Word Docs/PDF’s of Student Work
A powerful component of the ePortfolio is the ability for students to reflect on the projects they include in their ePortfolio. Each time a student adds content to their ePortfolio they will have the opportunity to write a reflection about their learning as well as make a connection to the GCISD Portrait of a Graduate. GCISD graduates will be
Skilled Problem Solvers
Collaborative Workers
Effective Communicators
Global Citizens
Self-Regulated Learners
Students will be creating their ePortfolios in Google Sites. The student’s site is managed and controlled by GCISD.
We hope that you’ll take the time to follow your child’s progress and provide positive constructive feedback from time to time. The aim of the ePortfolio is to share learning growth over time.
If you have any questions about the ePortfolio, please contact your child’s teacher.
Yearly Volunteer Requirements
In order to volunteer at BES this year in classrooms, during school-wide event, or as a field trip chaperone, please review the new volunteer handbook and complete the required background check. Thank you for understanding that this process must be repeated each school year. Now is a good time to complete this process and encourage all family members who might want to volunteer to complete it, too. For the protection of students and staff, all volunteer applicants must read the Volunteer Handbook and complete the online form authorizing the district to obtain a criminal history background check.
