Newsletter Week 1, Term 3

Huirangi Primary School, Monday 25th July, 2022

Kia Ora Koutou, Hello Everyone!

I hope this newsletter finds you well. I know there has been a lot of sickness in the community over the two week break. The flu season has hit us just about as hard as what COVID did. In previous years we have found there is an increase in winter illnesses in schools at the start of Term 3 as students bring back infections after travelling and socialising during the holidays.

For the start of Term 3, 2022, the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health strongly recommend that all schools and kura encourage mask wearing for the first four weeks of term in all indoor settings (where it will not have a significant impact on teaching and learning) for students in Years 4 and above. This recommendation does not include any situation where mask wearing might not be practicable, such as while eating and drinking, playing certain musical instruments, indoor sport, where it will have a significant impact on teaching and learning (for example, students with particular learning needs), certain activities such as singing or drama performance on stage, and PE. In these situations, particular attention should be paid to ensuring there is good ventilation during the activity, and physical distancing where practicable. Wearing masks works alongside other measures and can reduce new cases of the virus by as much as 53%.

Our community celebrated the Bertrand Road Bridge turning 125 in the holidays. This was a lovely event, held in stunning weather down at the bridge. A huge thank you to our Home and School team who gave up their time to supply sandwiches, cakes and drink for all of those who attended.

There was some property work happening here over the holidays. New posts have been installed in the playground and our sandpit has been topped up. Fundraised money from the Home and School went towards these upgrades. Thanks!

This term is action-packed! Please keep an eye out for updates on our School App and in the newsletters!

Ngā mihi nui,

Natalie Looney

Principal

Welcome to Huirangi School

Today we welcome six new five year olds to He Puāwai: Emma and Jamie Churchouse, Harley Dean, Arie'an Clarke-Pihama, Aliya Carr and Charlotte Oakes.

In Kōkihi, we welcome Archer Flitcroft and in He Kākano we welcome back Penelope Pearce.

Naumai, haere mai ngā tamariki! We are sure you will enjoy your time at Huirangi School!

Ballot for Out of Zone Students

We will be opening up for enrolments for families who live out of zone and want their tamariki to come to our amazing school!

This happens through a ballot process, and this year the BOT are offering out of zone spaces for 20 students wishing to start either in Term 4 2022, or in 2023.

More information about the ballot process will be out after our August BOT meeting. If you know of a family who is or may be interested in enrolling at Huirangi School, please get them to call the office.

Board of Trustees Elections

Our Triennial election date is Wednesday 21st September 2022. We are looking for new members to join our team of dedicated parents to help guide our kura!

If you are interested in learning more about what being a Board Member involves, please click on this link: https://www.schoolboardelections.org.nz/assets/05fbf6dda2/Community-member-guide-to-the-role-of-the-board-of-trustees_Sept-2020-v2.pdf

Nominations for both staff and parent candidates are now being called for and close at noon on Wednesday 17th August 2022. Nomination forms are available to collect from the school office.

Board Meetings are open to the public, so if you would like to come along to see what a BOT meeting involves our next meeting is at 6pm on Thursday 11th August in Māhuri.

Wacky Hair/Wig Wednesday

Next Wednesday the 3rd August, Lilah Elers and Philippa Andrews (He Kākano) will be leading a Wacky Hair/Wig Wednesday to raise money for the Child Cancer Foundation.

Please wear your hair wacky or wear a wig and bring a gold coin to support this cause. For every gold coin, each child will receive a glass of freshly squeezed juice made by Lilah and Phillipa.

We are so proud of these girls for wanting to take on this opportunity to raise money for those in need.

Ka rawe ngā kotiro!

Huirangi Home and School

Thanks to those of you who have already returned your Winter Getaway Raffle forms and money. Tomorrow will be the last day to return the tickets and money to school. The raffle will be drawn on Wednesday.

We are on the look for new members! Come along to the staffroom at 2pm on Wednesday 27th July, and see if being part of our Home and School is something you would consider. All welcome!
  • This term's major fundraiser will be the Colour Fun Run.

Children arriving Late

If your child/ren arrive at school after the 9am bell it is important that they report to the school office before going to class. This is for Health and Safety reasons as we must know who is on site at all times.
