Principal's Update
Brent Elementary Weekly Newsletter
December 16 - 20
We're down to just 5 days left in 2019 that we'll be in school. It's hard to believe! As I reflect on the first half of the school year, I continue to be impressed with this community. Time and time again, this community steps up and helps each other out. I am filled with as much gratitude as I was at Thanksgiving time. I sincerely hope that your families are able to relax, rest, and rejuvenate over the break for the second half of the school year.
This week will be filled with many exciting academic and fun activities for your student(s). On Friday, students will board the Polar Express and listen to the story over the intercom. Individual classrooms will have their own parties, so look out for information from your child's teacher about this.
Finally, please bring your child to school every day this week. While it may be tempting to leave a day early for a trip or whatnot, each day counts for your child's attendance record AND the school's attendance data. This attendance data shows up on Brent's State Report Card. When we return from winter break, I will send out more information on attendance rules, etc. We appreciate your effort in helping your child(ren) and our school.
See you in 2020!
Ms. BAker

Shoe Drive
Got SHOES? FMPA is in need of new and gently used shoes for our latest fundraiser. That's right! We want to help you clean out your closets! If you've got shoes laying around that don't fit, are no longer in style, or just plain don't like 'em anymore, we'll take them! We will be paid by the pound then the shoes go on to support micro-entrepreneurs in developing countries. It's a WIN-WIN-WIN! Contact April Bruder at fmpapresident@gmail.com to arrange pick up or find drop off bins at these neighborhood locations. Thanks for your support!
Our shoe drive runs through February 1.

Counselor Corner - Mrs. Rouse
Last week, students continued learning about emotions, self-regulation, and coping skills using the Zones of Regulation curriculum. Each classroom did an impressive job remembering the different color zones and the feelings that go with them.
With the help of our "zones toolbox," students learned four practical ways to help get back into the green zone. Reading a book, taking a walk, getting a drink of water, and taking deep breaths are the tools we focused on. Candle breathing is a fun way for children to take deep breaths as they pretend they are blowing out birthday candles on their fingers. Try it with them!
Thank you to the families who shared personal stories about their child using Zones at home. I love to hear about home connections! We will continue to work on coping strategies after winter break. This week we will be making a school-wide "green zone" tree while revisiting practical ways to give.
Thank you to our Elementary PTA leaders who are working tirelessly to provide a wonderful Christmas for our families. What a great 2019 it has been. Happy Holidays!
PTA Outstanding Educator
Every other year Elementary PTA gets to select a Finneytown PTA Outstanding Educator. This needs to be a certified staff person (teacher, administrator, therapist, counselor). We need nominations to select from. Anyone can nominate (students, family members or staff)
