The Fairview Connection

Message from Principal Ophus
Dear Fairview Families,
The past two weeks have been both productive and exciting here at Fairview! On Monday and Tuesday of last week, grade level teams, along with the help of literacy and math support staff held our winter data days. The purpose of these days is to look at our overall grade level data to help make plans related to tier one core instruction. In addition, we look at individual student data to establish plans to support them in class and during intervention time. This morning, we held our annual Valentine’s Day parties. It was a great time for students, staff and parents to enjoy being together, play games and share kind messages with one another.
Thank you to all of the many parent volunteers who planned and helped lead today’s parties!
Looking ahead, our 2nd grade students will be taking the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) during the week of February 24th. There are three sub-tests that make up the CogAT: verbal, non-verbal, and quantitative. We utilize the results of this assessment as one measure to qualify students for our accelerated math and enrichment reading programs. Accelerated math starts in 3rd grade and enrichment reading begins in 4th grade. We also utilize MAP assessments and teacher input as part of the process. Parents are notified in the spring if their child qualifies for our accelerated or enrichment programs. Additionally, we review our new MAP data three times annually to check if more students may be ready for the program. Any changes are communicated with parents on a case-by-case basis.
I am not sure how often you have time to visit our district webpage, but I wanted to highlight a few helpful resources that are included for parents that are worth a look. First, for those parents who have a child who receives special education services, our student services page includes several helpful resources for parents related to preparing for an IEP meeting, educational rights, communicating with the IEP team, and more. Click on this link to take a closer look. In addition, the District 57 Handbook provides parents with a wide range of information related to district policies and procedures that are important and most relevant to families. This link will take you directly to the District 57 Handbook. Of course, the District 57 website and Fairview website both have several other resources that are worth investigating, so please do visit from time to time when you have the chance.
I hope you enjoy the upcoming extended weekend. We are off on Monday in observance of Presidents’ Day, and look forward to seeing your children again on Tuesday morning!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
