What Did We Learn This Week?

Language Arts

This week we learned about plural nouns in grammar. Also, we read a story called What Lives in a Shell. The skill we focused on was categorizing and classifying and we had fun sorting buttons by color, shape, size, number of wholes, etc. We began to write about our past lives. Thank you so much for all your help with this assignment! We also began our first lesson in Writer's Workshop. We learned two very important rules: no walk, no talk (while we are writing), and when you are done, you have just begun! Also, we listened to a passage from the story Owl Moon to help us understand how to make our stories meaningful. Last, we reviewed what was taught last year in 1st grade about having Big Ideas and how they differ from Small Moments. We created a chart to give examples from our personal lives. Next week, we will focus more on developing stories from our small moments.

In math this week, we learned about the 3 properties of addition: commutative, associative, and zero/identity. We practiced patterns in addition, too. Then, we reviewed basic addition without regrouping and practiced regrouping to the 10's place. We had a blast playing math basketball to practice this concept!

Social Studies

It was all about land forms and bodies of water this week! We learned many and found pictures of them on the internet and labeled them on a map of the world. We also had fun coloring land form flip books and watching a land form video!

Noteworthy News!

Dear 2nd grade parents,

The Hebrew cursive letters ר (RESH) and ה (HEY) are very similar to the print style.

We practiced forming the pair, learned related vocabulary, read the story: אריה או יונה (ARYE O YONAH) and continued studying using our SHALOM book.

Please encourage your student to read at home for 10 minutes every day. Thanks!
