Tiger's Tale
November 13, 2020
Message From The Principal
Happy Friday the 13th!
I hope our Parent/Teacher Conferences went well and our teachers were informative and answered all your questions. I know they put in a lot of effort to prepare and give you the best possible summary of your child’s progress. I understand the time slots (10-15 minutes) are short and you may have left with additional questions. Please feel free to reach out directly to me if there is anything you would like answered by building administration.
Let’s congratulate our Outstanding Tigers of Week!
Please stay safe and be well! We miss our students and hope to see all of them very soon!
Student
Jill Carroll & Abby Hoxworth nominated Logan Olsen
"Logan is amazingly polite and helpful in class. We can always count on him to raise his hand to participate.
Logan always goes above and beyond in everything he does in class. He takes his time and will ask questions in and outside of class time. We can always count on him to raise his hand with and answer or opinion to share. He is polite and respectful and without a doubt a pleasure to have in class."
Sharon Kahl nominated Grady Sobotka
"Since the first day of school, Grady had been ready to learn and to do his very best. He participates in class, asks questions about the assignments and is eager to do the work. He always wants to be a step ahead. I appreciate his willingness to go that extra mile to be better than the day before. He is fun and shares stories with the class. He's a nice person to get to know! Go Grady!!!"
Staff Member(s)
Brittany Dunk nominated Mrs. Passarelli and Ms. Garrison
"Mrs. Passarelli and Ms. Garrison always go above and beyond to support and encourage my son. They have had so much grace and understanding during this unique time and continue to try to help my son reach his full potential. We feel so lucky to have them, especially during our first year of junior high!"

AVID
According to AVID, "During the pre-writing stage, writers consider the role of the writer, the audience, and purpose of the composition. According to Common Core Standards, this deliberate planning will produce the “complex and nuanced writing” students need to become college- and career-ready writers." Part of the pre-writing stage, graphic organizers can be very beneficial to help students organize their writing. Here is a document that may come in handy to help our writers organize their thoughts, depending on the writing assignment: Organizing Text Structures using Graphic Organizers

Get to Know ... Carol Large
Hello! My name is Carol Large and I am one of the two English as a Second Language teachers here at Thompson Junior High.
My parents and my three siblings were born in Chile and after immigrating to the US, I was born in Naperville, Illinois. Back when I went to school, there were no ESL supports, but if there had been, I would have received these supports. Like many students at Thompson, we always had a mix of English and Spanish spoken in the home.
I have two grown children. My daughter is a freelance photographer and my son is currently getting his Masters in Museum Leadership. I love to garden, take long walks, exercise, and visit with my kids!
I attended College of DuPage and completed the two-year Associate in Arts degree. I then continued on to Illinois State University, where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in International Business. Later, I attended National Louis University, where I received a Masters in the Art of Teaching, with an emphasis on teaching Spanish. During this time, I also got an endorsement in ELL/Bilingual Education and an endorsement to teach Junior High.
This is my 7th year working at Thompson and I am very excited to teach English learners the strategies they need to solve problems, to give them the background knowledge they need for comprehension, and to help them with their academic vocabulary. I definitely could have used this extra help when I was in school!
Get to Know ... Stacey Tharp
Hi Thompson Tigers!!!! My name is Mrs. Tharp and this year I teach 6th and 7th grade ELA. I have been a tiger for 9 years now and this is my 18th year teaching. I graduated from Illinois State University with my LBS1 in Special Education. I have two teenage daughters at home, a 6th grader and an 8th grader, and I am married to my high school sweetheart. I have two dogs, a bearded dragon, and lots of fish. I am a coffee addict, I love shopping and camping, and being with my family is my favorite past time. I look forward to a great 2020-2021 school year with all of you!
