Letter from the Principal
Dear Lions Park Families,
Happy New Year! I hope you and your families enjoyed the holiday and break and have stayed warm and safe during this unexpected long weekend! We were glad to see all students and staff back at school today, and I look forward to getting everyone back to their learning routines.
The new year provides a fresh start for students and staff. If you haven't already, it can be a good time to set goals with your child about how to improve in the new year. These goals could be small and will help your child feel successful if they are achievable and easy to measure. For example, your child may want to set a goal to practice their math facts for ten minutes each day or to organize their back pack and choose their outfit for the next day at night so that the mornings go more smoothly. They can track their own goal by making a chart and putting a sticker on each day they meet their goal.
Last week Mrs. Grzybek and I hosted grade level assemblies for each grade. We reviewed our schoolwide expectations to be safe, respectful and responsible. We talked about what this looks like and sounds like in our hallways, on our playground, in our lunchroom and in our bathrooms.
One goal our staff set for the new year is to focus on hallway behavior. While this may not seem important, quiet hallways are more conducive to learning in the classroom and people moving in a calm and organized way make our school safe and welcoming for students, staff and visitors. It is our expectation that students are quiet when walking in the hallway during learning times so that the classrooms they pass are not disrupted. We also expect students to walk in the hallways at all times. We find it to be particularly noisy when one class or grade level goes out for an extra recess as a movement break. We told each grade level that students who are talking when returning from classroom recess may miss time out of the next classroom recess. We do not take away lunch recess so that all students have the required thirty minutes of unstructured playtime at school.
While we hope that these especially frigid temperatures are behind us, please help your child to pack the right clothes for school each day. We do go outside if the "feel like" temperature is 16 degrees or higher. We also go out in the snow as long as it is not very wet. We want the students to enjoy recess and the right clothes can enable them to have fun in any weather.
We were fortunate to have author Tom Watson visit our school today. We are grateful to be able to provide opportunities for our students to hear from and be inspired by successful authors. Thanks to Ms. Kennedy, our LRC Director for arranging the visit.
Happy New Year!

FAMILY CODING NIGHT
Lions Park School celebrated Computer Science Education Week in early December by participating in the Hour of Code in the LRC. The Hour of Code began as a one-hour coding challenge to give students a fun introduction to computer science and has become a global learning, celebration, and awareness event.
On January 25th, Lions Park School would like to invite all families to participate in Family Coding Night, an event designed for the whole school and their families to participate in computer programming - together! Family Coding Night is an extension of the lessons and activities students have been working on, but no prior experience is necessary.
The event is open from 6:30 - 8:00. Families may complete activities at their own pace and should for about an hour.
Students should plan on bringing their school Chromebook. We hope to see you there and that everyone can be successful with coding.
